🎉 We’re turning 5️⃣ 🎉🎂
On Tuesday 5th May 2026, The Demography Project will be celebrating 5 years of impact, innovation & stewardship #ForPeopleAndPlanet!
Watch this space and join us next week for plenty fun & engaging activities ((and surprises 😉)) lined up just for you!
World Environment Day is celebrated annually on 5 June to inspire environmental awareness and action across the globe. In Kenya, the national celebrations will be held at the Arboretum Grounds in Ol Kalou, Nyandarua County, under the theme "A Global Call for Climate Action."
As part of the build-up activities leading to the national event, the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA), with support from the GEF-7 Sustainable Forest Management (SFM) Project implemented jointly with the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), today convened a Community Forum at Kimana Social Hall in Kajiado County.

LTWP has an installed capacity of 310MW but what if I told you it has never achieved 310MW?
According to the National Assembly report on energy , in 2020
1. Only 5 days in a year did LTWP output exceed 250MW
2. 67 days in the year ( 18%) the power output was under 100MW
3. 225 days ( 62%) had output of between 100-200MW
In conclusion an average output of 150MW a day but which heavily fluctuates. A ratio of 50% between installed vs actual output doesn’t seem like a reliable way to run any industries.
Being a VRE with little inertia and being second largest individual power source , this has great potential to always distabilize grid frequency due to intermittent supply
Green energy is a nice thing to have but for a Country to develop one needs proper baseload power with a reliability of more than 80%.
🌦️ Do you know what meteorological terms like Isolated, Scattered, Numerous & Widespread really mean? 🤔
Kenya Meteorological Service Authority (KMSA) will be sharing and explaining some of the common meteorological terms used in weather forecasts to help you better understand weather updates and stay prepared. ☔🌩️

NEMAKenya yesterday responded to an incident involving the illegal dumping of asbestos roofing materials at Smart Village in Kaasuvi Sub-location, Makindu Sub-County. The hazardous materials are believed to have been dumped during the night by unknown individuals.
NEMA Makueni County in collaboration with Public Health Department of Makueni County government took swift action, secured and cordon off the affected area to prevent public exposure. Residents are strongly cautioned against touching, collecting, transporting, or reusing the dumped asbestos materials. Asbestos is classified as a hazardous substance, and when its fibers are disturbed and inhaled, they can cause serious health complications, including respiratory diseases, lung damage, and cancer.
Members of the public are advised to keep away from the site and to report any information that may help identify the individuals responsible for the illegal dumping. Relevant authorities are undertaking the necessary measures to ensure the safe handling, transportation, and disposal of the hazardous waste in accordance with environmental and public health regulations.

🧾Monthly Forecast for May 2026
🌧️The outlook indicates that near-average to above-average rainfall is likely to occur in a few areas in Northeastern Kenya.
🌧️The Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley, the Coast and Northwestern Kenya are likely to experience near-average rainfall while the Southeastern Lowlands and much of Northeastern Kenya can expect near-average to below-average rainfall.
🌏Rainfall is likely to be enhanced over much of the country during the first week of May when the Madden–Julian Oscillation (MJO) is predicted to be in favourable phases. The enhanced rainfall may extend into the second week of May over a few areas. Depressed rainfall is expected during the second half of the month.
Cities can cut #AirPollution by 20–45% in 15 years with sustained action. Nairobi’s sensor networks help track hotspots, while Johannesburg is merging community voices into clean air planning. Momentum is growing for data-driven action in African cities.

Downgrade in Kenya's fuel standards (from 10 ppm to 50 ppm sulfur) impact:
1. Mechanical Component Failure: Higher sulfur clogs Catalytic Converters and Diesel Particulate Filters (DPFs); replacements can exceed KES 200,000.Sensor & Plug Issues: High manganese and sulfur lead to premature Oxygen sensor failure and spark plug fouling, causing frequent misfires.
2. Health & Environmental Risks Air Pollution: Burning dirtier fuel spikes the output of sulfur dioxide and particulate matter. Respiratory Health: These emissions are directly linked to increased asthma and respiratory distress, especially in densely populated urban centers like Nairobi. (traffic jam)
3. Economic Consequences: Mechanics now recommend halving service intervals (e.g., every 5,000km instead of 10,000km) to prevent engine damage.
Price Inequity: Despite the lower quality, Kenya’s fuel remains among the most expensive in East Africa due to procurement issues and global supply chain volatility.

Good evening patriots. Here is your last dose of anger for the night.
You will recall MT Paloma.
The ship that arrived in March with fuel at 43ppm sulphur.
Four times above Kenya's 10ppm legal limit.
The Energy CS said reject it.
Kenya Pipeline blended it anyway.
Into your engine.
Into your lungs.
Kenyans complained.
Spark plugs failed.
Engines coughed.
Today the government has released a press release.
With official letterhead.
And a very serious signature.
Temporarily adjusting fuel standards to 50ppm sulphur.
For six months.
Owing to Middle East supply constraints.
Let us connect these dots slowly.
Illegal dirty fuel arrives.
Government blends it anyway.
Kenyans complain about engine damage.
Government response?
Change the standard to match the illegal fuel.
They did not fix the fuel.
They fixed the law.
To fit the crime.
This is not fuel standards management.
This is evidence tampering.
On a national scale.
With official letterhead.
The MT Paloma fuel was illegal in March.
It is now government policy in April.
Your engine was not the problem Kenya.
Your standards were just too high.
They have been adjusted accordingly.
Everything else will follow.
As usual, stay angry. No fake optimism: Singapore is a mirage!
Dismas wa Tabu. Dreaming in installments. Billed in full.
Gov't eases fuel standards for six months, capping sulphur levels in petrol and diesel at 50mg/kg, in bid to protect consumers, stabilise economy amid Middle East conflict, Trade CS Kinyanjui says.
The government has temporarily relaxed fuel quality standards in a bid to avert a possible shortage as global supply chains strain under the weight of ongoing tensions in the Middle East.

• Water levels are projected to rise significantly, reaching up to ~6.4m by 2nd May
• This exceeds the flood warning threshold (>5.0m)
• Levels are expected to remain elevated before gradually declining towards early next week
⚠️ Flood Risk Status:
🔴 High Flood Risk across parts of the Tana River Basin, including Garissa, Hola, and Garsen
📍 What this means:
• Flooding is likely in low-lying and flood-prone areas
• Communities near riverbanks should remain alert
