On the issue of IDs, looking back, the first person or people who spoke out against FGM, for sure, they were attacked, ridiculed and abused by their communities and called all sorts of names. However, because of them, today everyone agrees that FGM is wrong and the practice thankfully is being eradicated.

A normal Kenyan need not be treated as a criminal and forced to prove his citizenship hundreds of kilometers inside the Kenyan borders. That should be done at the border points. There is no law in Kenya that demands a person carry his national ID all the time. What if it just got lost, misplaced or someone simply forgot to carry it? Does that make you a criminal?

Harassing every sick person, old people, business men and pregnant women to prove their citizenship while traveling hundreds of kilometers within their country does not make sense. It is an outdated security practice that simply antagonizes communities and wastes time and manpower of our security agencies. It is also prone to abuse and extortion.

Instead of wasting money in funding politicians’ lavish lifestyles or increasing the state house budget, public funds should be given to security personnel so that they can use modern ways of detecting and stopping crime. For instance, metal detectors to detect weapons and sniffer dogs to detect drugs would make more sense than asking for IDs. Having an ID in itself does not mean the individual is not a criminal. If anything, countless reports have shown that IDs are being issued carelessly out there.

Like decades ago with FGM, we must today also challenge systems that are not anchored in law and violate the rights of the people. People’s freedoms and liberties must be jealously guarded against abuse in security operations.

In 1775, Benjamin Franklin said, “a society that would give up a little liberty to gain a little security will deserve neither and lose both”.

While driving from Lamu, I was stopped by KDF officers who demanded to see my ID. I told them I don’t have it because I usually don’t carry it for fear of losing it.

They told me it’s illegal not to be in possession of my ID. I told them to show me the law that says so. Obvious they couldn’t because there’s no such law.

I didn’t know what that meant. I didn’t think it meant much. Then I started hearing that it means you can’t play in the next game, at least in the next game.
I said, “Boy, that’s a big—” You know, if it happened to another player, it would have been unfair, but when they take your best player—or just about; they have some great players—and say you can’t play, that’s very unfair.

That’s one thing, to penalize somebody for the game. But how do you penalize them for a game that hasn’t been played yet? It’s very unfair. You can’t do that.

So, yes, I asked for a review by FIFA. I spoke to a man who is highly respected, and by the way, whose level of respect has gone up tenfold.
