Absolutely shameful move by Dangote Refinery!
Just 24 hours after 90% of over 1,000 of it's Nigerian workers joined PENGASSAN, they’re all sacked under a flimsy “reorganization” excuse.
Two weeks ago, Dangote was singing praises, claiming Nigerian engineers outshine their Indian counterparts.
Yet last night, he blocked the night shift from entering, sent day and general shifts home, and fired them all, while foreign nationals keep their jobs? After saying workers could freely unionize? This stinks of betrayal and hypocrisy.
Where are all these people gonna to go now in this Tinubu economy? Families will be ruined, lives will be ruined, do they even think?
Where’s the job security in Nigeria? Nothing feels safe, not even our lives. If you’re not into crypto or following projects like @wallchain_xyz and @brevis_zk, bouncing back from setbacks is tough. That’s why I urge every Nigerian to learn about crypto.
Nigeria’s workers deserve respect, not this backstabbing. Let’s demand transparency and fairness. What’s the real fix for this injustice?
If the Nigerian government allows this to happen then we're finished!

Benefits to the country
1. NUPENG was a key member of the NLC that played a part in fighting military rule for the entrenchment of democracy. You may want to read about Frank Kokori and the June 12 struggles.
2. Many people may not have been following, but NUPENG and PENGASSAN have been at the forefront of further Nigerianization of the Nigerian petroleum industry ie creation of more jobs for Nigerians. An oil company (not Dangote) had over 10,000 expats in its employ, in violation of Nigeria’s local content laws. PENGASSAN took this up.
3. For many employers (not just in Nigeria), employees do not get top priority in the allocation of their resources. If not because of these unions, many employees would be treated as slaves. These unions checkmate excesses of these employers.
4. You all here aspire to work in oil industry. Some of the perks of oil industry you read about are not out of those oil companies’ generosity but strong unions that negotiate. I posted here few days ago that I bought my first car in March 2009 from the car grant I was paid few months after my employment. Car grant, among other perks, are negotiated by these unions (PENGASSAN in my case). If oil industry becomes like one-man businesses with bad labour practices, many Nigerian families will not be spared.
Finally, these macro and micro benefits don’t necessarily come at the detriment of the employers. They exist in Oando, Mobil, Shell etc. How many times have we read about them “sabotaging” businesses?
I don’t think any employer should be afraid of union if they don’t have sinister motive of instituting bad labour practices.
Dangote Refinery has sacked all its Nigerian workers, effective immediately, just 24 hours after 90% of them joined the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN).
They'll be recalled' – PENGASSAN confirms Dangote Refinery sacked all Nigerian workers
A fresh crisis brews in Nigeria’s oil sector as the President of the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria, PENGASSAN, Festus Osifo, has confirmed that Dangote Refinery sacked all its Nigerian workers after they joined the union.
He made this known in an exclusive interview with DAILY POST on Friday.
This comes after DAILY POST reported that the 650,000 barrel-per-day refinery sacked all its Nigerian workers 24 hours after they joined PENGASSAN.
Reacting, Osifo, who doubled as the president of Nigeria’s Trade Union Congress, assured that the company would reverse the decision.
“Yes, it is true. We saw the latter late last night (Wednesday).
“I can assure you that they will recall all of them,” he told DAILY POST.
Meanwhile, the spokesperson of Dangote Group, Anthony Chijiena, is yet to respond to DAILY POST enquiry as of the time of filing this report.
Recall that in the past weeks, Dangote Refinery and the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers have engaged in a face-off over the unionisation of workers.
NUPENG had declared a strike before it was suspended after the intervention of the Federal Government.
In a recent move, Dangote Refinery secured an interim injunction restraining the union and its affiliates from embarking on strike.
Meanwhile, the interim order has since expired.
The 90% that joined PENGASSAN knew that it was in their interest—protection from the many cruelties of capitalism—that they should join.
Now, Dangote is tacitly taking that right away from them.
Really condemnable. Ministry of Labour should follow that company very closely.
Dangote Refinery has officially laid off all of its Nigerian workers under the guise of “reorganization”, less than 24 hours after 90% of them joined PENGASSAN.
So dangote lied to us
