【Cambodia Just Sentenced Two Journalists to 14 Years for Taking a Photo】

Phorn Sopheap and Pheap Pheara traveled to the border, delivered aid to soldiers, and photographed Ta Krabei Temple with landmines visible in the background. For that, a Siem Reap court convicted them of treason and handed down 14-year prison sentences. The trial and verdict happened on the same day. It went unreported for two months.

These weren’t journalists leaking military secrets. They took a picture at a temple. The government chose to bypass Cambodia’s own Press Law and go straight to criminal treason charges, a decision that tells you everything about what this is really about. It’s not national security. It’s narrative control during a border conflict the government doesn’t want documented.

This comes days after CamboJA reported six more journalists detained over border and scam reporting. The individual arrests have been building for months, but 14-year sentences are a different thing entirely. That’s not a warning. It’s a sentence designed to make other journalists think twice before covering anything the government considers sensitive.
