The famous “Duck” at the Avenida Palace Hotel in Barcelona.
The famous “Duck” at El Avenida Palace in Barcelona is an optical illusion created by the hotel’s elegant spiral staircase. Viewed from the very bottom while looking straight up, the staircase’s sweeping curves, brass railings, and geometric design align to form the unmistakable outline of a duck’s head and beak.
The illusion gained worldwide attention through photographs by architecture photographer Carlos Lopez Martinez, transforming the staircase into a popular destination for photography enthusiasts. Opened in 1952, the historic luxury hotel is also known for hosting legendary guests, including The Beatles during their 1965 visit to Spain.
Fine example of Scandinavian Art Nouveau book design from 1904: the leather spines of the Swedish series The Natural Method of Healing (Den naturliga läkemetoden), Volumes I–III. Published by Bong & Ci's Förlag, Stockholm.
