On this first day of the Fast of our fathers, the Apostles, we also celebrate the Feast of the Entry of our Lord and the Holy Family to Egypt, heralding a journey of Christian witness that started with presence of the Infant Christ, was established through the ministry of Saint Mark the Evangelist and Apostle, and continues till this very day in the lives of the faithful.
“In that day there will be an altar to the Lord in the midst of the land of Egypt, and a pillar to the Lord at its border. And it will be for a sign and for a witness to the Lord of hosts in the land of Egypt…” Isaiah 19:19-20
A blessed day yesterday at @StMarksLondon for Pentecost Liturgy, during which wonderfully energetic young Chanters were Consecrated for the parish.
This was followed by a joyful time with the Arabic-speaking Family Fellowship meeting, made up of the grandmothers and grandfathers who are an incredible encouragement to us all.
A quick transition, then with the youth and young adults YRM Fellowship for a reflection on the Holy Spirit, Who can be as active and effective with and through us today as He was on the day of Pentecost.
A beautiful snapshot of the life of this vibrant parish, our @CopticDiocese, and our Coptic Orthodox Church globally, made up of committed and inspiring faithful of every generation for whom we are most thankful, and to whom we are most indebted.
Blessed to attend and share a reflection at this evening’s Evensong at @StPaulsLondon Cathedral with the Iranian Christian community, alongside my dear brother @MansourBorji.
Prayed for peace and stability in Iran, and spoke of the remarkable resilience of this vibrant community, both in Iran and Britain, and of the hope and blessing that it brings into a situation of war and conflict.
My sincere thanks to my dear brother and friend, @Tremlett_Andrew, Dean of Saint Paul’s, for hosting the event, and for his gracious welcome.
The devastating explosion occurred earlier today, May 31, 2026. The latest updates provide additional context regarding the casualties, the scale of the damage, and who was storing the materials.
Casualties and Immediate Impact
Death Toll: At least 46 bodies have been recovered, though some local independent media outlets, such as Shan State's Shwe Phee Myay news agency, report that the final death toll could be between 50 and 55. Tragically, rescue workers confirmed that at least six children are among the dead.
Injuries: At least 74 injured people have been transported to a nearby township hospital, and local rescue operations are still actively underway.
Property Damage: The blast was powerful enough to severely damage or destroy more than 100 homes surrounding the storage site.
Location and Control
The incident took place around noon in the village of Kaungtup, located in the Namhkam township of northeastern Myanmar—a highly sensitive area just 3 kilometers (2 miles) south of the Chinese border.
The region is currently under the control of the Ta'ang National Liberation Army (TNLA), an ethnic armed group that has been actively fighting Myanmar’s military junta. #PrivateInvestigator
When looking at the powerful words of our Lord Jesus Christ to His disciples in Acts 1:8:
“But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth”
Saint Cyril of Jerusalem reflects that:
“The Holy Spirit came upon the Apostles not merely to enlighten them, but to fill them with power for the ministry of the Gospel throughout the world”.
As the Church today, we are recipients of the Holy Spirit for that very same reason of sharing the Gospel through our words and ministry, and so I hope and pray that we will continue to be that strong, gracious and transformative voice in and for the world, that the love and peace of our Lord may be felt and experienced in every place.
A very blessed and joyous feast of Pentecost to you all.
Privileged to be at The Old Bailey yesterday with a dear friend, Robert Hughes Penney, Alderman and Sheriff of the @CityOfLondon, and with His Majesty's Judges.
This was followed by time at @TheSanctuaryCDL with my dear brother of 30 years, Fr Tekle Mariam, a senior priest of our sister Ethiopean Orthodox Tewahido Church in the United Kingdom, discussing our shared heritage, and the continuation of our collaboration partnership here in Britain,
…and a productive meeting with James Lynch, CEO of @WelcomeChurches, on the incredibly valuable work of the network, and its much-needed contribution to a helpful conversation around asylum, refuge, and immigration.
A busy day of meetings at @TheSanctuaryCDL:
Started with @ADFIntl’s @Rob_ADFIntl with a conversation around international human rights and advocacy, and collaboration with @Refcemi
Then with Rev @InderjitBhogal, and a conversation on @TheSanctuaryCDL’s ministry as a place of sanctuary.
And finally with @DWP’s Hilary Patel @randall_hile15, for a conversation on social engagement and vocational training for the most vulnerable.
“While they watched, He was taken up, and a cloud received Him out of their sight.” Acts 1:9
On the Feast of the Ascension, we rejoice in our Lord Jesus Christ, Who ascended in glory, lifting humanity with Him and opening for us the way to eternal life with our Father in His Kingdom, remembering the words of Augustine of Hippo, “He ascended not to depart from us, but that we may follow where He has gone before.”
At a time of Global instability, regional unrest, national conflict, and personal struggle, we recognise that the Ascension was not our Lord leaving the world behind, but Him enthroning our humanity with Himself in heavenly glory, and reminding us to always live with our eyes and hearts lifted up toward Him, until we are reunited once more.
A blessed and joyous Feast of the glorious Ascension to all.
🕯️DAY 4: The Spirit of Listening
"God will call us, sometimes with absolute clarity, and sometimes, it’s more quiet and discreet."
In this beautiful film, @BishopAngaelos reflects on the power of silence in prayer, and the importance of making space to listen for God’s voice.
A very special morning, celebrating Divine Liturgy at Sant Mark Basilica in Venice, where the relics of our great saint and father are kept and honoured.
This was followed by a warm, fraternal meeting between His Holiness Pope Tawadros II, and our delegation, and His Eminence Archbishop Francesco Moraglia, Catholic Patriarch of Venice.
Wonderful to be back in London, and straight to a post Resurrection celebration gathering with our @CopticDiocese priests and their wives.
So thankful for these men and women who serve not only our own Coptic Orthodox community, but wider society, so faithfully and as such incredible ambassadors.
Privileged to be serving alongside them all, and praying every blessing upon their ministry and their homes.
After returning from Istanbul and the very fruitful meeting of @PopeTawadros and @EcuPatriarch, a week of ecumenical engagement here in London:
Receiving at @CopticCentreUK Fr Yohannes Sibhatu who has faithfully served the community of our sister Eritrean Orthodox Teqahido Church in London for over 30 years, discussing the importance of further collaboration across our Orthodox Churches in Britain.
Meeting with my dear brother Rev Dr Casely B. Essamuah, Secretary General of @GCF_FCM at @TheSanctuaryCDL, to discuss opportunities for collaboration on ecumenical youth engagement and the formation of young Ecumenists.
Hosting our friends who form the @ChurchOfEngland Stevenage Deanery leadership team for a time of retreat, at @CopticCentreUK, and a discussion around the role of the Church in pastoral support across Stevenage.
Blessed and privileged to accompany HH @PopeTawadros II on his inaugural visit to HAH @EcuPatriarch Bartholomew I, with wonderful fraternal sentiments and words that express a commitment to continuing journey.
“Your Holiness, the bonds between the Eastern Orthodox and the Oriental Orthodox Churches in general, and between the Coptic Church and the Ecumenical Patriarchate in particular, are ancient and hallowed. They are rooted in the witness of Christians from the early centuries, nourished by reverence for the patristic tradition, sanctified by the blood of the martyrs, and animated by a shared liturgical and ascetic ethos.”
Patriarch Bartholomew I
A beautiful Liturgy yesterday at @StMaryStGeorge1 in Manor Park, East London, was proceeded by joyous Baptisms and Chrismation welcoming Daniel, David, and Young Azariah to the family through the sacraments.
Chanters were also consecrated for the parish during divine liturgy.
It was wonderful to see that both of these celebrations included young and older members of the community, showing the beautiful continuum of ministry of the Church, that commenced with our Lord Jesus Christ Himself, and is maintained till today.
