I am a Buddhist, but I attended a Catholic school, so we had prayer time every morning and again before we went home. Even now, I can still recite the prayers from memory.

A senior from my school recently gave birth. When the labor pains became intense, she was so terrified that, in the brief moments she could catch her breath, she said “In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen” and recited the prayers.

She is not a Christian. Years have passed since she graduated, yet the words came out of her mouth naturally.

Perhaps the power of prayer is something we understand not in the days when we are simply reciting it, but only when the day finally comes that we truly need it.
