4 years ago today, Denjell & Lucas, the cofounders of Tauri, wrote C++ for the last time and decided that @rustlang would be the foundation for what today is the most popular of all #OSS projects of its age on @github written in Rust:

I see the logo crop has caught a few people’s eyes. I’ve been experiment with grotesque brand design for a while, and it seems to get a reception each time.
Basically - when things are very comfortable to the eye, the mind just passes through them without stopping, because we glaze over what’s expected.
Including a jarring design decision in an otherwise coodinated design environment (all other brand PFPs) creates visual friction and makes people stop.
This often causes a visceral reaction and invokes instant conversation, often as criticism.
In this case, because the OKB logo itself is rectangular, reducing it to ‘the right size’ means a whole lot of negative space on the top and bottom of the logotype, reducing its visibility by around 50%.
Coca Cola gets this right in the design of their cans specifically. They could reduce the size of the logo so you can see it fully without turning the can around, but they have full confidence that they type and colour combination is iconic enough to survive the crop, and instead opt for max impact with crop.
Below is a quick comparison of actual can designs v what it would look like with an uncropped logo. Notice the loss of visibility if Coke tried to ‘do it right’.
There’s never a clear cut right and wrong when it comes to art, but design is closer to a science, and the devil is always in the details.
