Notified in 2021, the Srivilliputhur Megamalai Tiger Reserve (SMTR) is Tamil Nadu’s youngest tiger reserve, covering 1016.57 sq. km. Despite being newly established, it is now home to 13 resident tigers as per the 2022 estimation. The reserve is a biodiversity hotspot, sheltering species like the Grizzled Giant Squirrel, Lion-tailed Macaque, Nilgiri Tahr, and King Cobra, and is the origin of the Vaigai River. With landmark initiatives like land acquisition for corridor connectivity, plastic screening units, and plans to acquire 850 acres more, SMTR is rapidly emerging as a model for integrated landscape level tiger and ecosystem conservation. Extraordinary work by FD and Team 👏 #GlobalTigerDay #tigerday #Tigers #TNForest
Once an abandoned tribal school in Srivilliputhur, Tamil Nadu, TN Forest Department has transformed it into a thriving grassroots conservation centre called the Innovation and Incubation Centre for the Near Threatened 'Grizzled Giant Squirrel' (GGS). The site now serves as an environmental education hub within the Srivilliputhur Megamalai Tiger Reserve.
More than 2,200 students and teachers from 75 schools and 5 colleges have visited from across 10 districts, engaging in treks, expert talks, and immersive biodiversity experiences. Activities have included participation in Wildlife Week, hackathons, and the development of GIS-based wildlife protection ideas.
Local public buses have been branded with GGS themes, and outreach efforts include local-language booklets, mural art, and eco-merchandise.We aim to train at least one conservation leader from every participating school. We have set up 8 such Wildlife Incubation Centres across Tamil Nadu
Kudos to DD Srivilliputhur and his team for their outstanding efforts, and to the Director of AIWC for ensuring a smooth and impactful rollout. The year ends on a heartwarming note for us at TN Forest Department, as our Foresters united a lost baby elephant with her mother and the herd after rescue in the Anamalai Tiger Reserve at Pollachi. The little calf was found searching for the mother when field teams spotted her. With the help of drones & experienced forest watchers the herd was located and the tiny calf was safely reunited. Teams are still on ground for monitoring. Kudos to Ramasubramanian, CF, Bhargava Teja FD, Range officer Manikantan and the entire team 👍 videos FD @TNDIPRNEWS@tnforestdept@moefcc #elephantcalf
