I had thought I will be jubilant on the day when women's reservation in the Parliament finally becomes a reality! What I had not imagined is that women's reservation will be used as a crutch to significantly alter the design of our Parliamentary democracy. If the Delimitation Bill passes in its current form, not only will the balance between the north and south shift permanently, but Rajya Sabha will siginificantly weaken as well, which is the last check and balance on sitting governments in India. It is also abhorrent that bills of such significance are being pushed through the Parliament without any signifcant discussion and delibration. 1.5 days notice on bills that can alter the destiny of our country.

I am not jubilant today, I am ashamed, that yet again, women's empowerment has been reduced to a crutch to achieve other objectives, as if, in itself that goal is not worthy enough. I hope opposition parties today are not afraid to call this out, and vote againt the Bill (even if it is the hard thing to do). Yes that might delay women's reservation, but India's democratic traditions need to be protected and upheld.

The government chose to make women's reservation contingent on delimitation and census, it can choose to amend it without brininging these other changes simultaneously and that will have no opposition. We must get our place in the sun respectfully, and not as a compromise. We deserve better, India deserves better democratic traditions. Let this not become a template on how we determine the design of our democracy. #Notinmyname.
