Congratulations to the Forest Division, Seppa, on the discovery of Begonia nyishiorum!

A proud moment for Arunachal Pradesh as a new species of flowering plant—Begonia nyishiorum—has been discovered in the dense, high-altitude forests of East Kameng. Published in the prestigious journal Novon, this find reinforces Arunachal’s rich ecological heritage and global significance in biodiversity.

Heartfelt appreciation to DFO Shri Abhinav Kumar and his dedicated team, as well as the Nyishi community, whose traditional guardianship of the forest made this possible. With its unique crimson-fringed petioles, Begonia nyishiorum is not just a botanical marvel, it is a symbol of how much more remains to be discovered in the Eastern Himalayas.

As part of the Van Mahotsav celebrations, a tree plantation programme was organized at Eco Park, Bana with enthusiastic participation from local community members, school children, and officials.

During the event, a special message was delivered highlighting the urgent need to protect wildlife by discouraging the practice of wild meat consumption. The gathering was urged to adopt eco-friendly and responsible food choices that do not endanger biodiversity. Conservation of species is not only crucial for maintaining ecological balance but also for safeguarding the natural heritage for future generations.
