“IIT Bombay has history of systemic casteism. This happened to me in 2012 after I caught dengue. I almost lost my life because of a dangerously low platelet count, missed a month of classes, and had to drop courses.

During counseling, I was sent to an Electrical Engineering professor who was supposedly an “expert” in handling such cases, even though I was from another department. I was accompanied by my 1st year mentor who took me the office of this so-called “expert”. After my mentor left the office this so-called expert asked me my JEE rank and told me I did not deserve to be in IIT Bombay because of my SC rank, and that reservation was not meant for people like me whose family was not poor. He asked about my father’s income; I said we were a lower-middle-class family. He was supposed to help and guide me to recover in academics after a life threatening illness but the entire conversation was shaming me for my caste.

I never spoke about this to anyone until I was mature enough to understand what had happened. By then it was too late. My confidence was shattered in the first semester itself after he told me I would not get more than a 6-point CPI. I was only 18, vulnerable, and easily manipulated.

People ask why Sahil didn’t tell the SC ST cell. Well, the cell is defunct. “

Yes, elections are being rigged. But when you continue to participate in rigged elections, you legitimise these elections and help maintain the illusion that they are free and fair.

Maybe you keep contesting because you fear that if you don’t, you will stop existing. But what kind of existence are you trying to protect when votes are being stolen, your MLAs and MPs are being poached, and your parties are being split?

This is not political survival. You are simply trying to stay alive in a system that can weaken you, split your party or take away your elected representatives whenever it wants. How long can you survive like this?

And you cannot talk about election rigging only when it happens in states that matter to you and remain silent when it happens elsewhere. If elections are being rigged, it should matter regardless of the state or which party is affected.

You cannot keep saying the game is rigged while continuing to play it. Your participation is the only thing that gives these rigged elections legitimacy.

Think about the nation and its democracy before thinking about your own political survival. Take a stand and stop participating in rigged elections.
