The Greatest Mystery Isn't the Universe - It's You, According to the Bhagavad Gita
In Bhagavad Gita 2.29, Lord Krishna says:
"Some behold the Self as a wonder; some speak of It as a wonder; others hear of It as a wonder; yet even after hearing about It, hardly anyone truly knows It."
Context
After revealing that the Self (Ātman) is eternal, unborn, and indestructible, Krishna explains why this truth remains so difficult to realize. Though sages teach it, seekers discuss it, and scriptures describe it, the Self remains a profound mystery until it is directly experienced.
Core Meaning
Krishna repeats the word āścarya ("wonder") four times to emphasize the extraordinary nature of the Self. Unlike worldly objects, the Self cannot be perceived through the senses or fully understood through reasoning alone.
Many read about the Self. Many speak about it. Many listen to spiritual teachings. Yet only those who purify the mind through meditation, self-inquiry, and sincere spiritual practice directly realize their true nature.
The greatest discovery in life is not something outside us—it is recognizing the eternal awareness that has always been present within us. When this realization dawns, fear, sorrow, and the illusion of separateness begin to dissolve.
Practical Application
• Study spiritual wisdom with humility, but don't stop at intellectual understanding.
• Make meditation and self-inquiry part of your daily life.
• Shift your attention from constantly observing the world to discovering the awareness that observes it.
Reflection
You have spent your entire life exploring the world.
Have you taken the time to discover the one who is experiencing it?
@Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar's Insight
@Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar teaches that the Self cannot be understood merely through the intellect. In the silence of meditation, when the mind becomes still, one naturally experiences the limitless consciousness that has always been present.
The Essence of Bhagavad Gita 2.29
The greatest mystery is not hidden in distant galaxies or the depths of the ocean—it is hidden within ourselves.
The Self cannot be fully understood through words or concepts. It must be realized through inner silence, direct experience, and a purified mind. The highest wonder is discovering who you truly are.
The Sanskrit Shloka, Bhagavad Gita 2.29, is:
आश्चर्यवत्पश्यति कश्चिदेनमाश्चर्यवद्वदति तथैव चान्यः ।
आश्चर्यवच्चैनमन्यः शृणोति श्रुत्वाप्येनं वेद न चैव कश्चित् ॥ २.२९ ॥

Āścaryavac cainam anyaḥ śṛṇoti śrutvāpy enaṁ veda na caiva kaścit.)
English Translation
"Some behold the Self as a wonder; some speak of It as a wonder; others hear of It as a wonder; yet even after hearing about It, hardly anyone truly knows It."

Why is Becoming an @ArtofLiving Teacher Considered a Biggest Blessing?
Seema Lambha di, a Senior Art of Living Teacher explained this so beautifully
"So, the works of the Guru are such that we cannot comprehend them with our intellect alone. Gurudev’s entire focus right now is that we need the maximum number of teachers quickly - 10,000 volunteers, 40,000 teachers.
@Gurudev keeps saying this repeatedly; why is he saying it? He isn't doing it for his own sake; he is refining our lives by making us teachers. By becoming a teacher, Gurudev washes away a huge amount of our karmic load. It’s as if we come under a special protective umbrella of Gurudev once we become a teacher.
Whatever he is doing, it is for our own wellbeing. If we are serving, it is for our own welfare; if we become volunteers, it will bring us benefit. It surprises me that people have to be 'woken up' to serve - that they need so much motivation and inspiration. We all live closed off in our own shells, seeing life only within that narrow space. We are living life inside a bubble where it’s just 'my life' and nothing else. When we live such a limited life, we simply cannot remain happy. You cannot find true contentment in life that way. No matter how much wealth you earn, no matter the luxury holidays you take or the fine clothes you wear - true fulfillment will only come to you through service.
Everything you seek, you will find only through service.
The Path to Fulfillment can happen through only Service and Grace"

@Gurudev Sri Sri on importance of Service
The Best form of Service is to uplift someone's state of mind.
Seeing God inside you is meditation; seeing God in the person next to you is service. Service and meditation go hand in hand.
The more service you do, the more merit you acquire in life.
When you make service your sole purpose in Life, it eliminates fear, brings focus in the mind, a sense of purpose & long term joy.
Do some seva (acts of service). Be useful to people around you. It’s the best antidote to stress. You must contribute to society. When you do some act of service and kindness, it brings an immediate feeling of inner rejuvenation.
Service leads to the dynamic experience of the heart. It creates a sense of belongingness.
Lack of services can lead a person to depression. Pain is inevitable. Suffering is optional. Pain is physical. Suffering is mental. If you are not sensitive to others’ pain, then you are not a human being. That is why you need to serve. Service alone can bring contentment in life, but service without silence tires you.
Service without spirituality will be shallow, and cannot be sustained for a long period. The deeper the silence, the more dynamic will be the outer activity. Both are essential in life. When you bring some relief or freedom to someone through seva, good vibrations and blessings come to you. Service alone can bring contentment in life, but service without silence tires you. That is why taking part in the @ArtofLiving Silence Program (AMP) is very beneficial here.
When you have come to this world, do something good that benefits everybody. Do not stay entangled in thinking only what you will get. There is nothing for you to take away from this world. There is nothing to take away from here. You have come to give. You have come here to do something beneficial for everybody. And you should all get together in doing service.
The Art of Living is not just an organisation. It's a global movement of people committed to joy, to service, to peace. Anyone who believes in these values is already part of it.
If celebration is aimed at uplifting the hearts and minds of the people around you, uplifting the society then that type of celebration is service. It is sacred.
Your time is precious, use it wisely. It holds the power to lift others from misery and bring light where there is darkness. Even a moment spent in service and love can transform a life. Make every second count.
Pleasure simply brings more craving. But the problem is that we try to get contentment through pleasure. True contentment can only come through service.
Spirituality is nothing but caring and sharing; offering oneself in service.
If you isolate and think only of yourself then you will have the fear of death. Once you are in service, there is no fear of death.
One way to get over the feeling of loneliness is to do some service (seva) and be useful to people around you. The service you did will bring a revolution inside you. Every time you are lonely, you are just coming in touch with your own boundaries. It is your limitation and boundary that is the real cause of your unhappiness. Just be grateful and pray for peace. That very moment, you will start smiling and however hopeless the situation is, you will walk through it. If you think nobody loves you, know for sure that you are loved. The earth loves you; that’s why it is holding you upright. The love of the earth is its gravitational force. The air loves you; that’s why it moves through your lungs even when you are sleeping. The Divine loves you very dearly, deeply. Once you realise this, you will never feel lonely.
Don’t think only about yourself, but do some service activity. Do some good work in society, bring smiles to the faces of people, and gain some merit. If you bring smiles to the faces of others, then you have a right to demand something for yourself. This is the real currency. You need to have some bank balance first to shop, isn’t it? Seva makes your bank balance go up. Then when you ask for whatever you want, you will get it. You can buy the whole supermarket if you have enough points. Let us resolve to do something good in society, and let us have the confidence that whatever we need will come to us; will be given to us. Our wish will definitely be granted.
When you bring some relief or freedom to someone through seva (service), good vibrations and blessings come to you. Seva brings merit; merit allows you to go deep in meditation; meditation brings back your smile.
Astrological predictions are like a weather forecast. There is always a probability factor. The remedy for malefic effects is Devotion and Service.
Just do service. Don’t think too much, whether it is selfless or selfish.
Your strength and talents should be utilized for the good of others. When you use them for service, it brings you satisfaction and happiness.
Our service should be focused on a better world and a better society. And in personal life, have a strong conviction and faith that all is well and good is going to happen.
Seva (Service) means to do something for someone else without expecting anything in return. It means to do without the desire of any reward in return. You should do whatever you can do, whether it is by contributing your time, or by donating your money, or just by speaking about positive things. You should do seva in whatever way you can. But it does not mean that you do seva by putting your family members in trouble, or making them uncomfortable and going against their wishes. You should balance both intelligently. Do your Seva and also manage your family well.
Finally
Question - Gurudev, How do I get physically close to you?
@Gurudev Sri Sri - Take up some service project then I will be forced to meet you.
Question - Gurudev, which one is the best expression of being human - Dhyana (meditation) or Seva (service)?
@Gurudev Sri Sri - Both are needed. It is like asking, is it better to watch television or listen to it. What will I say? They both go together hand in hand. What is meant by Seva? It means that whatever little bit you can do, just do it. What you cannot do, don’t do. Did you get it?
