Your wife finishes an overnight shift in the ER. She’s exhausted. All she wants to do is come home to you.

Then she sees someone who needs help.
She doesn’t drive by.
She pulls over.
Because that’s who she was.

Former Marine. ER nurse. The kind of woman who ran toward people when everyone else was running away.

She and another former Marine stopped to help a crash victim.

They never made it home.

According to investigators, a suspected slob drunk driver slammed into them, ending the life of a woman whose last act on this earth was trying to save someone else’s.

Her husband wasn’t waiting to identify her body.

He was waiting for his wife to walk through the front door.

Instead, he got the kind of phone call that changes a life forever.

She had just celebrated their 14th wedding anniversary. They had plans to hike every national park in America together. She had just been accepted into the Air Force as a second lieutenant. Their future was wide open.

Now all that’s left are memories… because one slobs reckless decision erased an entire lifetime that belonged to someone else.

Her husband said he hopes she’s “patrolling the pearly gates looking for somebody that needs help.”

That tells you everything you need to know about the woman he loved.

Rest in peace, Nery Benitez.

Some people leave this world exactly the way they lived in it.
