What manipulatives do you use in 7-12 math?

Adolescents often think manipulatives are only for younger children.

Why? Because some only see them used in younger grades.

This idea is reinforced by their own math experiences!

All learners need to explore math ideas concretely. No matter the grade, no matter the age!!

Ok. Today was Day 1 of my intervention support class. I threw one of these @openmiddle probs on the board. 25 min later kids are laughing, getting excited, competing. Some of these kids have been MIA all year! Great way to start off with a win!

Our high school pathways are generally built upon the premise of getting students into Calculus, but only 3% get there.

Perhaps we should rethink our pathways to be beneficial for more students.
