We’ve completed reading I Contain Multitudes! My favorite part about the book was that the author illustrates each individual as a separate ecosystem containing several different microbes. It neat to think we’re a little “planet” for them. #csubmicrobiome
3.9 million adults in the US used probiotics/prebiotics in 2012. There are studies that say it enhances your microbiome/health, then there are those that say it doesn’t. Who are your influences: scientist, teachers, celebrities, family, neighbor, models.... #CSUBmicrobiome
Horizontal gene transfer allows for microbes to share genes that increase their fitness. This can be bad if we’re trying to treat an infection(resistant genes) but good if it helps our microbiome survive stress pressure. #CSUBmicrobiome
Riftia pachyptila are giant marine tube worms. They have no mouth, no gut , and no anus! How do they eat? They have a trophosome full of bacteria that assist with chemosynthesis providing them with food/energy. #CSUBmicrobiome
How cool is S. epidermidis! This bacterium is part of our natural biome that colonizes our epidermis. Its able to suppress T-cells for colonization, but when they “sense” a pathogen on their host they trigger a cytokines response for help.🤯 #CSUBmicrobiome
Is your skin crawling because of the Halloween spookies or because of the millions of microbes that inhabit your skin? Your skin microbiome provides many unique environments for these creepy crawlers to make a home (don't worry, they're good for you!) #CSUBmicrobiome
It’s important to understand dysbiosis. A microbe can be both non/pathogenic to the same host. We need the understand their tipping points & their interactions with other microbes w/in the biome. It’s any but simple it’s entangled and dynamic. #CSUBbiome
Gut microbes partly explain the success of gastric bypass surgery. Akkermansia increase w/in the gut post surgery. Transplantation of the new restructured biome into sterile mice also showed weight loss. Are microbes to blame for our weight loss/gain? #CSUBmicrobiome
Can we keep up w/ microbes? This video shows how E.coli evolves tolerance/resistants to an antibiotic within several days. #CSUBmicrobiome https://t.co/U4PFQhSF7o
Me hugging my microbiome associates because their establishment prevents from other pathogenic microbes from colonizing on me and making me sick. #CSUBmicrobiome
Just got these cute little guys! scientists in Singapore were the 1st to genetically modify fish to fluoresce. The long-term goal was to detect toxins in water so that polluted waterways could be identified and the local communities using those waterways could be protected.
A healthy gut is colonized w/ microbes and is not sterile. Bacteria in the gut can increase surface area which will increase nutrient absorption. Microbes tell the host how to use their own genes to make a healthy gut. #csubmicrobiome#IContainMultitubes
