How do you explain the value of walkability, community, continuity, and history to people who have never experienced them?

I think the answer is to show what urbanism makes possible:

-a child walking to a friend’s house, and to school, to sports practice
-an employee reading a paper/responding to emails on their train commute into the office rather than wasting valuable time in highway traffic
-an older neighbor still able to live independently,
- a family running into friends at the grocery store, neighborhood-based church
-a teenager having real freedom without needing a car,
-a corner store/movie theater/bowling alley surviving because enough people live nearby,
-a neighborhood accumulating beauty because generations have cared for it, invested in it, benefited from its agglomerative energies

It wasn’t only the sun. It was the air.

In this famous view of Grand Central Terminal, sunlight poured through the high windows and became visible inside the smoky atmosphere of the Main Concourse.

Often dated to 1929 and attributed to Hal Morey, the photograph captured a version of New York that is almost impossible to recreate today: different air, different skyline, and a terminal lit like a cathedral.

@Toibin1 Unlikely to be 36% from leaking pipes. Other countries are 5% to 10%. Unless all connections are metered (which they are not) Nighttime flows are an unreliable indicator. Hospitals , Nightshift workers, livestock. Furthermore , the output and population demand are roughly equal.

A PARK WRAPPED BY HOUSING

This is the Hufeisensiedlung, or Horseshoe Estate, in Berlin.

Built in the 1920s, the estate was designed around a bold idea: social housing did not have to be dark, dense or purely functional.

Its most famous block curves around a central green space and pond, creating a shared landscape at the heart of everyday life.

Nearly a century later, it still looks like a lesson in how housing can shape community.
