NEW BRIEFING from @Diaspora_Hum: Recognising Diaspora Humanitarianism: What we know and what we need to know more about. Read at: https://t.co/5TZOI22roj
#Remittances to conflict-affected countries surpass official humanitarian aid six times over. Six times! Along with other forms of #diaspora relief, they blur the boundaries between short-term emergency relief and long-term #development.
👇🏼
Diaspora #humanitarianism grows out of transnational connections that link #diaspora groups with their families, kinships, and (ancestral) homelands. This relational and affective dimension enables rapid mobilisation and delivery to hard-to-reach areas.
👇🏼
Accountability in #diaspora#humanitarianism practices tend to be informal and trust-based, structured around reputation. Overall coordination with formal political or humanitarian systems is usually absent and the working relationship is ambivalent.
👇🏼
As we celebrate our 1st year anniversary this month, we welcome you to read our just released first joint policy brief - 'Recognising #Diaspora#Humanitarianism -
What we know and what we need to know more about'.

NEW BLOG: Tech and Trust Challenges: Emerging Trends in Somaliland Diaspora Response to Covid-19, from the @Diaspora_Hum project with @diisdk@IDS_UONBI@rakorcc and @RVInews. Read at: https://t.co/h2xHvkwv71
Bottom line: The pandemic presents an unprecedented hardship for many diaspora communities themselves and is unsettling the distinctions between those giving and those who are in need of assistance. This is compounded by a lack of trust in the official response to Covid-19.
However, most of these campaigns have fallen far short of their expected targets, and an increasing number of smaller donations are from non-Somali donors.
Six months into the pandemic, traditional kinship-based fundraising and the Hawala system, an informal money transfer system based on trust, are declining. Instead, online platforms are emerging as principle mechanisms for mobilising assistance and creating awareness.
Covid-19 is changing how diaspora assistance to Somaliland is mobilised. A new DIIS comment, written by @Diaspora_Hum colleagues highlights changing priorities and emerging fundraising platforms.
