After World War II, the US was left with the majority of the world’s gold reserves.

The Bretton Woods system was created, making the U.S. dollar (USD) convertible to gold at $35 an ounce while pegging the currencies of other countries to the USD.

At this time, the U.S. generally ran trade surpluses, meaning it exported more goods than it imported.

This would change throughout the 1950s as overseas military spending increased dramatically, particularly through the wars in Korea 🇰🇵 and Vietnam 🇻🇳.

This created a balance of payments deficit, where more money was leaving the U.S. than was coming in.

As a result, foreign banks and companies ended up with a glut of U.S. dollars and were pressured by the U.S. government not to exchange them for gold, as this could have led to a drain on U.S. gold reserves and undercut the basis of American global financial hegemony.

Instead, foreign banks invested their surplus USD into Treasury securities and other U.S. financial assets, recycling those dollars back into the American economy, where they could continue financing massive military spending.

When Nixon ended dollar convertibility into gold in 1971, this system was solidified because countries no longer had the option to exchange their USD for gold.

U.S. Treasury securities effectively replaced gold as the primary reserve asset of the international monetary system.

The U.S. could now run persistent deficits without having to worry about a drain on its gold reserves undermining its financial power.

Around this same period, the so-called petrodollar system emerged, ensuring that one of the world’s most important commodities would be priced in USD, further strengthening the dollar’s global role.

This is why we have a hyper-financialized U.S. economy that seems to produce nothing except war and Wall Street profits.

The recycling of USD allows elites to generate enormous paper wealth through financial speculation, interest, and rent extraction, rather than investing in productive economic activity such as manufacturing.

Trump promised to fix this problem on the campaign trail, but he was always far too stupid to understand what was actually going on, and far too corrupt to do anything about it even if he did.

Ultimately, this system has always been enforced at the barrel of a gun through U.S. military supremacy, which allows Washington to pressure other countries into complying with its financial demands.

As one of the few real American Marxist-Leninists, I am very glad to see the contradictions accentuate in the Democratic Party, just as I was glad to see MAGA accelerate the contradictions in the Republican Party.

I forgive the masses for voting Democrats just as I forgive them for voting for Republicans. That was the entire logic of MAGA Communism.

In some sense, we Marxists are “more advanced” than the masses.

On the other hand, the very gap that separates Marxist education from the masses is the fault of Marxists, and shows they are only more “advanced” abstractly, theoretically, not concretely, practically.

Therefore, Marxists must humble themselves and be especially sensitive to shifts in the consciousness and mood of the masses, even if, from the standpoint of pure theory, they seem primitive, uneducated, and wrong.

Theory alone is not the truth, practice, too, is its own truth.

There are many tankie LARPers from 2010s who wagged their fingers at the Bernie movement, etc. They turned out to be “right.” But it meant nothing, they gained nothing, earned no credit, because practically they had no connection to the masses.

When the masses are betrayed by: Trump, Bernie, Mamdani, etc. - 99% of the time they just go back to being politically apathetic and demoralized.

They rarely flock to marginalized political radicals who were “right.” The thing that drew them into politics disappointed them, and so they leave.

Some Marxists in DSA (geese people) draw false conclusions from this: That we need to embed ourselves in the Democratic Party and its electoral campaigns.

This is a Right deviation.

Marxists must embed themselves in the contradictions themselves, and form strictly independent organization entirely devoted and responsive to these contradictions.

They must be at the avant-garde of articulating, making sense of, and clarifying all contradictions in politics to the masses: Wherever those contradictions exist.

No one needs to tail or enter the Democratic or Republican Parties. They must enter and mold organization in the darkness of the contradictions themselves.

The goal of a Communist Party must be to absorb the shockwaves of demoralization after inevitable betrayals, to do that, you must make sense of contradictions to the masses, so that when betrayals occur, they already have the tools to make sense of them.

To simply gloat and brag about how much you didn’t fall for the latest scam does nothing.

Congratulations, you are a smart individual, but how smart are you when you cannot effectively impact reality in any way, or educate the masses themselves?
