They took a B-17 that had been left for scrap, rebuilt it by hand, and bolted on so many extra machine guns it became one of the most heavily armed bombers in the Pacific.
Then they volunteered for a solo mission over enemy territory that few crews wanted.
Its tail number was 666.
This is the story of the Eager Beavers..🧵1/7
Two urban battles occurred in Khorramshahr, Iran, both during the Iran-Iraq War (1980-1988):
1. 22 September-10 November 1980; and
2. 24 April-24 May 1982.
Mostly dismounted personnel here; use of machine-guns, RPGs, mouseholes, loopholes.

@LordAshcroft@NAM_London@johnsonbeharry Superb! The stories behind these are some of the most inspiring in history.
Thank you for sharing them and keeping this part of British history alive.
From a Ukrainian Armed Forces publication regarding drones in urban combat:
“future military operations are likely to include more urban combats, asymmetric threats, and hybrid warfare, where clear front lines are absent. In such conditions, technologies such as drones or [AI] systems can play a supporting role, but only infantrymen can effectively operate in complex environments.
For example, in densely populated cities, soldiers “on the ground” are needed to interact with civilians, make quick decisions in unpredictable situations, and perform tasks that require human judgment. Machines cannot yet fully replace this unique human ability to adapt to the chaos of war."
"The tactics of the infantry of the future will be flexible and autonomous… However, we do not abandon classical methods. In urban areas or dense forests, where technology is limited, the physical presence and unconventional solutions of the infantryman are indispensable.”
Today we are not only stirred but also going to be assessed by the amazing medics. For decades they have scraped me off the floor & started the fixing process. Thanks @_Royal_AMS
Off to Pirbright med centre & wondering what the biscuit bribe levels are these days?🤞🤣

Les Ukrainiens adoptent encore une nouvelle tactique. Ils ne lancent pas que des mines par l'intermédiaire de drones, mais ils lancent aussi des barbelés pour ralentir les assauts motorisés...👀👀👀

@toniwriter Hahaha! Filling in the army paperwork has been the same for decades. Not even carbon paper could save us then, or linked databases now!
Good luck! 🤞
Not had chance to get to this today, but the nice people at Defence Concepts Engineering (DCE) in Hinkley got in touch yesterday to tell me about them being selected to provide 15 of the X Series UGVs to the British Army. Great news I thought and worth sharing
