CELEBRATING THE 6th OLDEST FOOTBALL TOURNAMENT IN INDIA: The Herlihy Memorial Cup, Darjeeling
The Herlihy Memorial Cup is the 6th oldest football tournament in India, and the most prestigious sporting tradition in Darjeeling.
It began in 1917 and was established by Jack O'Mahogany in memory of his aunt, Mrs. Herlihy, who died in Darjeeling. He donated a pure silver trophy, which remains one of the tournament's most treasured symbols.
The competition is organised every year by the Darjeeling Gorkha Hill Sports Association at Gorkha Stadium in Lebong. It is played in a knockout format with football clubs and institutional teams from Darjeeling and the surrounding regions, including Bhutan, Nepal and Kolkata. The final is traditionally held on 15 August, India's Independence Day, and attracts thousands of football fans.
For more than a century, the Herlihy Memorial Cup has played a major role in promoting football in the Darjeeling hills. It has provided local players with a platform to showcase their talent and has become a source of pride for the region.
Although it is not a national tournament, it enjoys great respect because of its long history and rich tradition.
Today, the Herlihy Memorial Cup has become a lasting symbol of Darjeeling's football heritage.
Good Luck to all teams participating. Youall are part of a great historic legacy.
