Important video with transcript about calcium intake. 700mg calcium recommended per day! Under-intake of calcium may lead to osteoporosis or brittle bones. This can increase chance of fractures and mobility. @beh353#beh353
@molly_mcnichols@beh353 I agree, Molly. This class definitely opened my eyes to how important nutrition is and how it affects our lives. Incorporating macronutrients into our diets help us maintain energy, long term health, and even better sleep. @beh353#beh353
This course has taught me how to provide better care to patients by adding nutrition into care plans. I will be able to work w/ dietitians to provide more nutritional ideas to pts. I plan to help end the unfair treatment of overweight patients in this field. @beh353#beh353
@annekit3 @EmmaDArpinoRD@beh353 Hi Anne! I thought that was interesting too. I think that there are many stereotypical ideas of what is categorized as “junk food” as Emma mentioned. @beh353#beh353
Thank you for your time and knowledge @EmmaDArpinoRD ! I loved the “junk food” talk. Instead of telling someone “cut blank out of your diet”, offer alternatives or even just suggest adding the necessary food groups in addition to their current diet for nutrients. @beh353#beh353
This is interesting because we just read about Tom Brady’s alkaline diet. People utilize this diet to improve digestion and also to amplify athletic performance as this article discusses! Also, sodium bicarbonate is often used to relieve symptoms of indigestion. @beh353#beh353
Can reducing acid-forming foods and boosting alkaline-forming foods replicate the performance-enhancing effects of sodium bicarbonate without the adverse effects? An alkaline diet may boost athletic performance by as much as 20 percent. https://t.co/2JfZSytRuO
I thought this was interesting post about how nutrition can affect the health of the blood vessels. It gives a good visual of how our tissues and organs work and how our diet can affect our body systems! @beh353#beh353
@molly_mcnichols@beh353 Hi Molly, this looks like a helpful article. It’s important for children to get all of the nutrients and healthy food necessary in order to promote overall health, growth, and development! @beh353#beh353
This is a reliable, factual article or that could assist parents in how to fulfill their children’s dietary needs. I like that it gives a breakdown of ages and each food group! This article looks very helpful🍓 @beh353#beh353 https://t.co/cVrSHW0p1h
@then_katherine@beh353 I completely agree, Katherine! It was truly disheartening to hear those negative stories. There needs to be a major change in the way some healthcare providers treat overweight patients. @beh353#beh353
This information is so important! 1%, it is crazy that such a small decrease in price could make healthy options much more affordable for many people. It is sad to think that some life threatening illnesses could be prevented if healthy food was less expensive @beh353#beh353
Even a 1% decrease in the average price of all fruits and vegetables might prevent nearly 10,000 heart attacks and strokes every year. https://t.co/21mcfYiDs0
It was concerning that a woman was misdiagnosed and not taken seriously because she was overweight. I plan to ensure that this does not happen and that all of my patients, no matter their weight, feel heard & comfortable when coming to me with medical concerns. @beh353#beh353
Since we’ve spoken about saturated fats, I thought this was interesting! It discusses plant based diets and how this diet may improve blood glucose levels! I think that this info could help many individuals who struggle maintaining normal blood glucose levels. @beh353#beh353
The reason those eating plant-based diets have less fat buildup in their muscle cells and less insulin resistance may be because saturated fats appear to impair blood sugar control the most. https://t.co/SXbeAy7wPB
I didn’t know that obesity is directly linked to a defect in hormone leptin. Watching James speak about fat shaming opened my eyes to how truly insensitive and rude people can be. This needs to change & I hope to be a part of change while working in healthcare! @beh353#beh353
@molly_mcnichols@beh353 Hi Molly, I did not know about the leptin gene either. I learned about a lot of contributing factors to obesity this week and more people need to understand that obesity is not only linked to unhealthy diet and lack of exercise! @beh353#beh353
My barrier would be lack of time to plan, shop, and cook. College is stressful and the time in a day goes by so fast! It is hard to find time to shop and cook in advance. When I don’t plan ahead, I sometimes order out which can be unhealthy and cost more money.🍔 @beh353#beh353
@taline261@beh353 Hi Taline! I agree, I often find myself having little time to prepare meals because of such a busy schedule! If you have any tricks as to how you plan out time for meal prepping I’d love to hear them @beh353#beh353
I thought that this was fitting to repost since we’re talking about barriers to healthy eating this week. Some tricks on how to save money and eat healthy! It even has some tips on how to meal prep in a cost effective way @beh353#beh353
@molly_mcnichols@beh353 Hi Molly! This is very surprising to me! I feel like I’ve been taking vitamins pretty much all my life. My mom would give me a daily flinstone vitamin haha. I do agree though I think it’s very possible to get a healthy daily dose of vitamins from our diets! #beh353@beh353
about vitamin D deficiency! We obtain Vitamin D from sun exposure and/or supplements. This article discusses how the elderly and those w/ underlying conditions need to get sufficient vitamin D even if they are not able to get outside! #beh353@beh353 https://t.co/evrdTY3jGj
