You're right about the "work needed to survive" being infinetly easier and less time consuming , but that's where the problem lies. Population keeps growing and so we don't need as many people for those job yet they still have to do something to have meaning in society( which is actually the opposite of a hedonic lifestyle). That's where a bunch of corporate bureaucracy comes in, with hierarchies, detailed rules and specialized roles and all of that is complexified to create meaning where there is not, thats why people are depressed and anxious and tired. Because the work that actually matters doesnt need as much engagement anymore, we dont have access to it, everythingis automated and centralized by the gov. Its not because they're lazy, that's an ill faith point of view.
