Langer’s Delicatessen-Restaurant has been a cornerstone of this city for 77 years - longer than the Dodgers and the Lakers have called Los Angeles home. Recently, Norm Langer told the LA Times that he is considering closing his doors.
His reason has nothing to do with his business itself, and everything to do with the city’s blatant neglect of its people and the failure of our elected officials. As a business owner myself and a Los Angeles native who grew up going to Langers, this is breaking my heart.
Our city officials’ widespread inaction on rampant drug use and crime is failing our small businesses and our communities, like McArthur Park, and driving them out of the very neighborhood they helped build.
What are we doing? I have known Norm for decades and hundreds of people like him. This city was built on the backs of people like Norm and his family. Our city thrives only when small businesses are successful. All across Los Angeles, restaurants and retailers are closing because Los Angeles is experiencing rising crime, homeless encampments, and unkept streets. To fail them is nothing short of a betrayal.
It’s irresponsible and unfair to residents, employees, and business-owners who have sacrificed so much for this place we call home.
We need our Mayor and City Council to act like leaders of a world-class city. To act with diligence and determination, before the people and places that make Los Angeles a home for all of us are gone forever.
