1 January 2027 marks an important milestone for Data Protection in Sri Lanka.

From this date, key provisions of the PDPA governing the processing of personal data and the obligations of controllers and processors come into operation.

The priority now is readiness, strengthening governance, understanding personal data flows, addressing compliance gaps and putting appropriate safeguards in place.

The transition period is an opportunity to build sustainable data protection practices, not simply to meet a regulatory deadline. Ultimately, the goal is to foster a culture of accountability and responsible use of personal data across Sri Lanka.
