Using @INV3_Math , 4th graders are creating a deck of 40 fraction cards that each evidence fraction numeracy using visual representations and equivalency. Deep math talk + working collaboratively= a whole lot of learning success✅ @HES1929@SosnovskyHES
@JSerravallo After a mini lesson, prior to them “doing the work,” we engage in a metacognitive routine where they identify their level of understanding and ability to be successful w/ the task. It empowers them to take active ownership over their learning.
@JSerravallo Anything by Kate DiCamillo especially The Tiger Rising and The Tale of Despereaux yields deep reflective conversation. We also adored Joe from Save Me a Seat by Sarah Weeks and Gita Varadarajan! Maribeth Boelts picture book: A Bike Like Sergio‘s leads to a fantastic discussion.
⚡️Electrifying and energetic learning with @FOSSscience as we worked collaboratively in lab groups to test materials for conductivity using a motor circuit with a switch, pushing ourselves to use Tier 3 vocabulary. @SosnovskyHES@BrianHTerryEdD@HES1929
#WorldReadAloudDay2025 “It all begins with the opening of a book.” My favorite part of instruction is performing an interactive read aloud. Today, I had the joy of sharing a favorite text with @MsWagner_Krauss third grade scholars. @SosnovskyHES@HES1929
True Community of Practice: Unprompted students supporting and relying on each other to learn and create, mediated by the work of literacy. The beauty of a student empowered workshop. 💫@SosnovskyHES@HES1929@TCAdvancingLit
🌟Cultivating Literate Identity: Student led writing workshop small group rereading for literary essay details. Engagement. High level academic talk. Productive. @HES1929@Academics_HWPS@SosnovskyHES
Routines to Build Reading Community: Every time we gather as a group of readers we sit in stillness for several minutes reading our independent books beside one another creating a reading energy that then allows us to be ready for new learning, PRIOR to the mini lesson. @HES1929
Honored to be a presenter of Building Literate Identities, and share this wonderful moment with @LucyCalkins, my longtime inspiration for studying sociocultural theory in practice, at #NCTE24@HES1929@MossflowerRWP
Honored to have been a presenter with @tedsclassroom, @drlindseymoses and Meredith Ogden at #NCTE24 sharing our work on cultivating literate identities in our students through communities of practice, authentic experiences, and student-voice empowered assessments. @HWPS14
Incredibly excited to be a presenter at #NCTE24 Annual Convention in Boston, next week! I’m looking forward to sharing learning theory in practice, and learning from others! 💜🖤💚🩷 @ncte
I teach a reading group a strategy for deeper comprehension, then I step away availing a student in the group to continue leading the lesson. Total engagement, ownership, yielded from instruction focused on building a literacy identity. Less me,more them. @HES1929@SosnovskyHES
Reading partners referencing my small group reading binder of anecdotal notes of them. Making reading instruction transparent builds community, cultivates literate identity, &engages ownership in learning. “She taught us this so remember to try it today.” @HES1929@SosnovskyHES
STEM&Habits of Mind: Save Wendell the Worm from his capsized boat! Constraints: no hands, just 2 paper clips; he can’t touch the water (desk)! Get him into his life jacket in his boat w/ his oar working ingeniously and collaboratively. Learn from mistakes. @HES1929@SosnovskyHES
My favorite Class Family start of year activity: Using personal artifacts to discover what we have in common and what makes us unique. Cultivating a positive social/emotional climate is key to year-long success! @HES1929@SosnovskyHES
@DinaMWeiss is setting expectations from day one! Students shopped for just right books and then enjoyed silent reading time. Practicing sustained reading is vital to building stamina!
Given the criteria of lighting a bulb w/ 1 wire and 1 D-Cell energy source during a @FOSSscience inquiry launch, this team was the 1st to light up with success! They’re beaming✨w/growth mindset and teamwork. Tomorrow we dive into content of electric circuits. @HES1929 @TLT_HWPS
The work of literary essay is layered w/a synthesis of literacy & self management skills. We push ourselves to say something remarkable yet grounded in text evidence about various complex short stories. Expectations were high but our thoughts were deep! @HES1929@TCAdvancingLit
