@ChimeWhistle Having been involved in fatalities, had to talk someone off the track who was stood in my 4 foot and having had to examine for several miles for people, I’d much rather the job was stopped and we sit there for hours as opposed to the trauma and heartbreak of anything else!
Welcome home Reid, Victor, Christina, and Jeremy! 🫶
The Artemis II astronauts have splashed down at 8:07pm ET (0007 UTC April 11), bringing their historic 10-day mission around the Moon to an end.
A new milestone for humankind: The crew of Artemis II are now the farthest any human has ever travelled, reaching a maximum distance of 252,752 miles from Earth.
This surpasses the previous record set by Apollo 13 in 1970 by about 4,102 miles.
The last non-GWR lower quadrant semaphore signal (Ketton’s Section Signal - K14) has entered preservation at the Midland Railway Centre. The only signal I’ve made the walk of shame to on the Big Railway too! Photo of it in service from the MRC’s Facebook post.
International Women's Day offers a salutary reminder that the first named railway employee was a woman.
A 1645 entry from the burial registers of Whickham, a village in North East England and the former site of the Whickham Waggonway, shows the existence of a widow gatekeeper. Despite the intervening centuries, it wasn't until 1979 when Karen Harrison became one of the first female train drivers.
Considerable strides have been made since then, with women now representing more than 16% of the industry's workforce, but still not enough. There are some wonderful charities and networks campaigning for change including Women in Rail, Routes into Rail and Women in Transport.

Tomorrow marks 28 years since I started work on the big railway. This #InternationalWomensDay2026 I want to thank all those who have supported me along the way. I wouldn’t be driving a train today without each and every one of you! (Not driving or keyed in at time of photograph!)
Have spent quite some time on Pathfinder trains in years gone by, so had to go out to see the last one, and it just happens to have been my son’s 1st mainline Western too. Shame it was behind the stopper.
