No — the KKK was not “the Democratic Party,” and the Democratic Party did not found it. It was a terrorist organization started by Confederate veterans. In the South during Reconstruction and Jim Crow, however, most of its members and many of its political beneficiaries were Democrats, because that was the party of white Southern power after the Civil War.
Reconstruction (first Klan, 1865–1870s)
Six Confederate veterans founded it in Pulaski, Tennessee, in 1865–66 as a social club that quickly turned to violence against newly freed Black people and white Republicans. Nathan Bedford Forrest, a former Confederate general and slave trader, became its first Grand Wizard. He spoke at the 1868 Democratic National Convention.
Its explicit targets were Black voters and officeholders plus white Republicans enforcing Reconstruction. Historians describe it as functioning in practice as a paramilitary force that helped Democrats “redeem” Southern state governments through intimidation, murder, and election violence. By the mid-1870s, Democratic control of the South was restored and the first Klan faded.
The South became a one-party Democratic region (the “Solid South”). Almost all white politicians there were Democrats; Republicans were the party of Lincoln, emancipation, and federal Reconstruction.
