@R_H_Ebright@BiosafetyNow Every country has the right to support their own public health efforts however they choose. There are endemic BSL3 pathogens circulating in Madagascar & several groups including Pasteur Institute are active there, so there is absolutely access to training/expertise available.
@OutbreakJake@FLAHAULT Also-As with any vaccine-but more critical here given unknown efficacy against BDBV, a clear explanation during consent description is critical with every offering so there is no confusion should the vaccine fail to protect against BDBV despite excellent protection against EBOV
@OutbreakJake@FLAHAULT IMO,binding antibody alone is not an appropriate correlate of protection to make this kind of call. While there is one small study in monkeys to suggest limited cross protection of ERVEBO to BDBV, it suggests huge risk in use for BDBV given how critical trust in any vaccine can be
@DrSarahAxelrath Crippling anxiety is the perfect medical condition. If you don’t suffer from it, you wouldn’t understand it especially when longer acting drugs are debilitating & dulling. Xanax, when used responsibly & appropriately dosed can be life saving by reducing stress related harm.
@R_H_Ebright@WIRED I disagree&would argue most of the infectious disease research community would also disagree w/that assessment given how scientifically productive the program was.Yes there were some bad apples that should have been surgically removed, but not the abject failure you describe.
@ProGof39474@R_H_Ebright@WIRED Looks like their CREID included the same site in SL,so the stop work was temporary or specific. Kicked out of testing cases yes, kicked out of working in county-doesn’t seem so.Was just asking for details as it didn’t make sense why they would be back in SL for CREID if kicked out
@theblaze Aren’t these animals being used to make drugs or vaccines for Lyme disease? Is t that a good thing? If there isn’t another way to do it, maybe just make sure they are used as responsibly as possible with the least amount needed to transition to human testing?
@ProGof39474@R_H_Ebright@WIRED Ok thanks! I don’t see much here about Tulane getting kicked out of SL.The hospital they worked at was closed temporarily because it was completely overrun w/Ebola cases beyond its capacity. I do not think Tulane’s was kicked out, but I think maybe the other group-Metabiota-was?
@thackerpd Incorrect. I understand these centers were routinely used to conduct research but also supported outbreak response through the research conducted and the expertise held with the investigators within that network.
@TylerAStepke Anderson&Gary probably were not the best spokespersons for that program.I understand there was a lot of great work coming from CREID, & I think the national security concerns are actually valid. But the article would have been better served supported by less controversial sources
@R_H_Ebright@WIRED In your opinion, why was the CREID program not renewed? Why not just keep the program going but refine/fix any perceived problems and remove any investigators that are causing problems like Anderson, Ecohealth, ect… why punish the class if other parts of the program had value?
@DrNeilStone Many people enrolled in those Ebola trials were already in late stage disease as I understand it, the enrollment criteria was too lenient and beyond the threshold of protection if someone came in with lower viral burden. Any drug would have failed if the patient is too far gone.
@TheSeeker268 I doubt the US government would agreethat approach would be in the best interests of US national security and I’m sure any scientific leads would not appreciate that level of transparency in a competitive funding environment. No other countries do this, why would the US
@Bryce_Nickels The question easily becomes, would you want a family member treated in Africa or the US where the standards of care should be equivalent, but are most likely not. Further, would we bring back US soldiers or US Government officials, including upper administration?
@DagobertIX@mattwridley Yes on different receptor, but not clear that this should matter if a FCS affords better functionality of receptor, regardless of structural differences. If it wasn’t needed, it would likely be selected away from daughter populations IMO.
