The Power of Your Vote: Guarding ₦480 Trillion in Four Years
By Prof Danjuma Sale
When you go out to vote, remember this:
You are not voting for a philanthropist who will share rice, noodles, salt, or cash for short-term relief.
You are not voting for a social worker who will organize occasional outreaches.
You are not voting for a religious leader who will attend burials, weddings, and naming ceremonies.
You are voting for people who will collectively control the resources of this nation.
In 2026 alone, the Federal Government’s budget is projected at about ₦58.47 trillion, while the combined budgets of the 36 states stand at roughly ₦36.98 trillion. When you add the allocations and expenditures of the 774 Local Government Areas, total public spending approaches ₦120 trillion in a single year.
Now pause and reflect.
₦120 trillion in one year.
Multiply that by four years of a single electoral cycle.
That is approximately ₦480 trillion under the control of elected officials.
If you break that figure down further, it translates to an average of about ₦620 billion per Local Government Area over four years.
₦620 billion.
Imagine what ₦620 billion can do in your local government:
•Modern primary healthcare centres in every ward
•Well-equipped secondary schools and technical colleges
•Paved rural and urban roads
•Reliable water supply schemes
•Youth innovation hubs and vocational centres
•Agricultural processing clusters
•Functional primary healthcare with drugs and personnel
•Street lighting and safer communities
Now ask yourself: where is this transformation?
The tragedy of our politics is that we are often distracted by crumbs while the bakery is being shared behind closed doors. We celebrate token gestures while trillions flow through annual budgets. We applaud handouts while systemic underdevelopment persists.
Elections are not charity contests. They are management recruitment exercises. You are effectively hiring individuals to oversee hundreds of trillions of naira on your behalf. That is a serious responsibility.
If a candidate cannot articulate:
•A clear budgetary priority
•A transparent accountability framework
•A measurable development plan
•A strategy for prudent resource management
Then that candidate is not prepared to manage ₦620 billion in your local government over four years.
Power must not be handed to people who will waste such enormous resources year in, year out. The cost of poor leadership is not abstract—it is measured in collapsed hospitals, unemployed youth, insecurity, inflation, and decaying infrastructure.
The next time you stand before the ballot box, think beyond today’s gift. Think about the next four years. Think about ₦480 trillion. Think about what your community could look like if even half of that money was prudently deployed.
Your vote is not a thank-you card.
It is a contract.
And contracts worth ₦480 trillion demand competence, integrity, and vision—not handouts.
Choose wisely.
A new Nigeria is POssible
AM Saleem, a concerned citizen, has been detained and is currently still in prison as I write this. this is not just about one person, it is about all of us. A society where voices are silenced instead of heard is one we should all be worried about.
I am humbly requesting the authorities to respect due process, uphold justice, and ensure that his rights are protected. Detention should never be a tool to suppress expression or intimidate citizens.
We ask for transparency, fairness, and humanity. Let the law take its proper course, not fear or intimidation.
Please help share this message. Awareness is important. Silence helps no one.
I’m a Nigerian, and I’m here to tell the world that there is no genocide against Nigerian Christians, it’s all lies and mischief. If you’re a Nigerian and agree with me, please reply and retweet to help spread the truth.
As long as lives are involved, i will not be silenced. And you shouldn’t too.
It is high time that our unions @nationalnma@nard_nigeria and their leadership @balaaudu53@Jebzmanchini@mohagirei , come together and form a strong stand on the challenges facing our healthcare system, with emphasis on the regulation of Nigerian doctors working hours , and demand for action.
We need to form committees that will make research into each challenges and deduce solutions, and as a single body with one voice, forward it to the relevant authorities @Fmohnigeria@MDCNOfficial for action.
Our healthcare system is at the brink of collapse but our government continues to deny the obvious. The policy on curbing health workforce migration is yet to be actioned, and we continue to loose our healthcare providers as much as we produce them.
It is time that Mr President @officialABAT declares a state of emergency on Health. Mr President’s Renewed Hope Agenda seems to be a promising approach to tackling the healthcare challenges in the country, however until the average Nigerian is able to afford quality healthcare from wherever they are, accessing fully optimized PHC’s, and out of pocket spending on health reduced to the barest minimum, that hope will not be felt by anyone.
We must stand by the truth and do right by the people we are responsible for.

Indeed, a tired doctor is a very risky doctor.

God bless us all.
