experience.

There is no basis for comparison - except the aim is to add value to the Nigerian Health System. The US 🇺🇸 is a developed healthcare system and Nigeria health care system is leagues behind.

To add voice to your assertion, day-to-day medical students know that the cost of medical education is way more than what @pastorpoju says - which is misleading and falls in error of generalization.

The cost of medical tuition is one component of the cost.

[NARD @nard_nigeria]

Dear @pastorpoju,

With due respect, your recent comments reflect a misunderstanding of the realities surrounding medical education and the healthcare system in Nigeria.

Contrary to your claim, no medical doctor is trained on N500,000. A peer-reviewed study by Osoba et al. (2021), published in the Pan African Medical Journal, estimates the cost of training a doctor in Nigeria to range between $21,000 and $51,000—this includes tuition, living expenses, and other associated costs.

Despite this investment, the average Nigerian doctor earns about N250,000 monthly (roughly $170), a stark contrast to their counterparts in the U.S., where training costs around $275,000, and the average monthly salary is about $16,000 (₦24 million).

For a Nigerian doctor to qualify and practice in the U.S., their family often spends over $10,000 to support the process.

This is not about ingratitude—Nigerian doctors are among the most hardworking and resilient globally. While the health system is in a state of crisis, many citizens cannot afford medical tourism. It is easy for Pastors with access to tithes and offerings to seek care abroad, but their average Nigerian church member cannot. We urge you to speak truth to power and advocate for a better health system; Nigeria currently ranks 142nd out of 195 globally.

As a final note, it may be worth considering the Apostles’ model—focusing on prayer, fasting, and the Word—rather than “serving tables.”

Wishing you a reflective and blessed Easter.

the required USA exams to be able to practice in the USA (about $25,000) is all part of the struggle of the Nigerian Doctor.

Granted, we understand the message is trying to pass across but to put the message in this way trivialises and waters down the Nigerian doctor

This is sad news because I remember I was one of the media personalities invited during its opening. I was representing @Doctors_quarter as a private writer.

I am really devastated because at the time, I was devoted to writing about progress in health in Nigeria.

Nigerian hospitals, including the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital (OAUTH), are grappling with a severe shortage of medical professionals, prompting closures of crucial wards. The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) cites dismal working conditions and government recruitment failures as the driving factors. Recently, the House of Representatives Committee on Health expressed alarm over the exodus of doctors and nurses abroad, causing a detrimental decline in the country's healthcare workforce.

Notably, Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) has shut down five wards with 150 beds due to personnel shortages. Dr. Amos Magaji, committee chairman, termed the situation worrisome and emphasized the need for legislative efforts to curb the rising trend of medical professionals seeking opportunities abroad. Dr. Dele Abdullahi, NARD president, reveals that the acute doctor shortage is causing burnout, proposing a one-for-one replacement policy. Despite interventions, the government has not adequately addressed the issue, leading to a daily exodus of doctors. Urgent calls are made for a 'one replace one' policy to stabilize healthcare staffing levels across the nation. The gravity of the situation is underscored by a section of OAUTH shutting down, reflecting the nationwide healthcare crisis.
