Agatha Christie, the best-selling novelist who ever lived, wrote her murders with a cup of cream beside the typewriter, and drank it.

She was born in Torquay in 1890 and grew up on Devonshire cream. Her mother served it at tea by the bowlful, on the grounds that it was a great deal nicer than cod liver oil.

She never grew out of it. Late in life she wrote that "my favourite thing has been, is, and probably always will be, cream."

She meant drinking it. Her grandson remembered her taking it from an enormous cup with Don't Be Greedy painted on the side, an instruction she never once showed any sign of following. The vicar's daughter in the village said there was always a cup of it by the typewriter.

She didn't care for alcohol and hated cocktail parties. She wrote 66 detective novels on the cream instead, and The Mousetrap, which opened in 1952 and is still running. Poirot, Miss Marple, the Orient Express, Death on the Nile. More than 2 billion copies sold.

Miss Marple shares her weakness for cream, and so, when pressed, does Poirot.

If you grew up in Britain in the 1970s, there was a battered Christie on the shelf of every holiday cottage and a jug of proper cream on every table that had a pudding on it.

She died at home in Wallingford in January 1976, aged 85, a few years before the country was told that cream was a danger to the heart. The jug became single, then half-fat, then a can of squirty foam, then a treat you apologised for.

Nobody in history thought up more ways to poison a cup.

She always knew which cup was safe.

Missouri records state two men without legal status were arrested for kidnapping and sexually assaulting a teenage girl. In Polk County, Florida, a deputy found a man with an aggravated assault warrant who had been deported last year and returned illegally; ICE placed a hold. At a Trump rally in Syracuse, Mike Tyson appeared on stage and voiced support for the administration while speakers targeted Kathy Hochul.
