For far too many members of this Association, the annual payment of the Bar Practising Fee has been an exercise in institutional obligation without a corresponding experience of institutional value. The question that too many lawyers ask but rarely say aloud is: what, precisely, does my BPF get me?

Under an LOA presidency, that question has twelve specific answers.

One: Free digital stamp and seal for all members on payment of the BPF, with permanent migration to a secure digital imprint stamp that eliminates the logistical failures of the current physical distribution system.

Two: Free access to Law Pavilion, the New Weekly Law Reports, and electronic law reports for all lawyers of zero to ten years at the Bar, removing a significant recurring cost of practice from the members who can least absorb it.

Three: Reactivation of the N1.5 billion single-digit interest rate loan scheme, with improved accessibility, clearer eligibility criteria, and an Islamic finance option for members who require non-interest arrangements.

Four: Increase in the NBA life insurance payout from N2 million to N4 million in the event of death or complete incapacitation, with corresponding upward reviews for terminal illness and partial incapacitation.

Five: Free qualitative training through the NBA-ICLE, with at least seven CPD hours available free to young lawyers every month.

Six: A comprehensive NBA member application, NBA One, modelled on the International Bar Association's member platform, through which every member can interface with the Secretariat and conduct all NBA activities.

Seven: Free NBA Journal for all financial members on payment of the BPF.

Eight: A health insurance scheme open to all members, with twenty members per branch covered at no cost each year and a minimum additional health fund investment of N20 million.

Nine: Free Annual General Conference attendance for members who are seventy years and above, excluding Senior Advocates of Nigeria.

Ten: A twenty per cent reduction in conference fees for young lawyers.

Eleven: A national mentorship scheme for young lawyers, structured across three tracks: one-to-one mentorship pairing, group and speed mentorship, and the Law Firm Mentorship Initiative providing institutional guidance between established firms and start-up practices.

Twelve: Five per cent of the NBA's annual income set aside for career development, scholarships, and sponsorships specifically targeting young lawyers.

Each of these commitments is drawn directly from the published LOA manifesto. Each has a delivery mechanism. Each has a funding basis. None of them are new ideas that appeared only in election season. They are the coherent welfare programme of a candidate who understands what NBA membership should feel like.

Membership in the NBA should not feel like a tax. Under LOA, it will feel like belonging to an institution that is genuinely working for you.

Point of correction, we Muslims don’t pray because of worldly needs alone. And asking what a billionaire is still praying for shows a big misunderstanding of what prayer means in Islam. Salah is about submission, gratitude, and acknowledging our status as servants of the Almighty.

Wealth cannot not buy you a pass out of your obligations to the Creator. A rich man needs forgiveness, peace of mind, good health, and a favorable standing in the hereafter just like anyone else.

On that prayer mat, your net worth is zero. In fact, some of the ordinary persons behind him, might hold a higher status in the sight of the Almighty.

So, Dangote is sitting there as a servant of Allah fulfilling his ultimate purpose of why he is on earth in the first place.

A witness does not lose his evidence simply because, under cross examination, he says he signed his witness statement in his lawyer's office.

Once the witness is sworn in open court and adopts the statement, it becomes his oral evidence. If no objection was raised at trial, it cannot be expunged on appeal on the ground that it was not signed before the Commissioner for Oaths.

A 12-year-old boy was swimming in a few feet of water off Alaska when an orca shot straight at him at full speed. It bumped his shoulder, then folded its body in half, turned, and swam back out to sea. The boy was unharmed. The researcher who described it said the orca realized at the last second that he was not food.

Wild orcas have killed zero humans in all the years people have kept records. Not one person, in any ocean, ever. The same animal, kept in a marine park tank, has killed four people.

They could if they wanted to. An orca can kill a blue whale, the biggest animal that has ever lived. Off South Africa, pods flip great white sharks upside down, hold them still until they stop moving, and eat the liver. The sharks leave those waters and stay away for up to a year.

What an orca will eat comes down to one thing: what its family taught it to hunt as a baby. Scientists have found at least ten different kinds of orca around the world, and each kind eats only a short list of foods. Some hunt only salmon. Some hunt only seals. One group near Antarctica eats just one kind of fish. A salmon-eating pod will swim right past a seal, because no one ever taught them to catch seals.

Baby orcas learn the family diet from their mothers and grandmothers, the same way you learned which things in your kitchen are food. This gets passed down for generations and almost never changes. Different kinds share the same water, ignore each other, and don't even breed with each other. Humans were never on a single one of those lists. We are just not something an orca's mother ever taught it to eat.

There is one exception on record. In 1972, a surfer off California was bitten hard enough to need more than 100 stitches. He was in a black wetsuit with sea lions swimming nearby. The orca let go the moment it realized its mistake and left.

And wild orcas do more than leave us alone. In a 2025 study, scientists recorded 34 separate times, over 20 years and in oceans all over the world, when wild orcas swam up to people and offered them food. Fish, birds, pieces of seal, a whole stingray, once a sea turtle. Each time, the orca dropped its catch next to the person and waited to see what they would do.

Greek mythology always leaves me pondering - it stuns me with the vivid pictures, then allows me to pick lessons.

So is the story of Antaeus. He was born of Poseidon and Gaia. Poseidon ruled over the seas, Gaia was the earth herself - the mother of Uranus.

Long before he was defeated by Heracles, Antaeus was always rumoured to be invincible. Stories recorded that Antaeus would wait at the entrance of Libya and force passersby to wrestle him - he always crushed them, piling their skulls so he could build a temple to his father, Poseidon.

This is where it gets interesting - he was only invincible as long as he maintained contact with Mother Earth. When Heracles eventually crushed him, Heracles did so by suspending him in the air, away from Mother Earth, crushing him in a bear hug.

In reflection, a lot of people have not been truly tested by the realities of the world because they have insulation. Insulation in systems, in parents, in their backgrounds. Just like Antaeus, the illusion of their strength is in contact with Gaia.

On the day Heracles decides to test your resolve, all it takes is for you to fall once, and if there is anything I know, it is the fact that a man who is used to standing and has never fallen will not be able to stand on the day he falls.

An extension of this conversation goes to parents who shield their children entirely from life's realities. You cannot apologise for having leverage in life, especially if your parents paved your way - but it is important to consistently stress-test how much of life you really can handle.
