On August 22, 2025, she boarded the Lynx Blue Line light rail. Surveillance footage showed Decarlos Brown Jr. allegedly att@cking her just minutes later. She was fatally st@bbed and d!ed at the scene.

Brown was arrested and charged with murd€r. In June 2026, a federal judge ruled that he was not mentally competent to stand trial at that time and ordered treatment.

In August 2026, Iryna’s family filed a lawsuit against the City of Charlotte and its transit security contractor, alleging inadequate security contributed to her death.
