To support the Burkinabe Revolution, Cuba received many young people from Burkina Faso for training in various fields:
Medical training: From 1986, Cuba received many young people from Burkina Faso who attended Cuban Medical Schools, learning from the world-class Cuban experts.
Cuba provided full scholarships which included tuition, food, accommodation, uniforms and educational materials. Sankara’s plan to bring universal healthcare to the Burkinabe people was greatly advanced by Cuba’s assistance.
Agriculture and agronomic training: Cuba played a substantial role in training Burkina Faso’s agricultural technicians in irrigation, pest control, soil management, and community-based farming systems.
Engineering and vocational training: Cuba’s technical institutes provided training for Burkinabe workers in civil engineering, rural water systems, electrical installation, and construction trades. This was pivotal for building wells, building schools, improving housing, and rural electrification in Burkina Faso.
Literacy: With Yo Sí Puedo, one of the world’s most successful literacy campaigns, Cuba advised Thomas Sankara’s government on rapid rural literacy strategy, women’s educational programs, and teacher mobilisation programs. Cuba’s assistance was pivotal in Sankara’s government reducing illiteracy from 90% to 70% during Sankara’s short-lived revolution before the US-French-backed assassination of Sankara. This was one of the fastest recorded drops in illiteracy in all of Africa at the time.
