Ranked Choice Voting: A Common-Sense Reform Backed by Conservative Leaders in NC
The Commission on the Future of North Carolina Elections has released a landmark 2025 report, confirming what many election experts have long recognized—our state’s outdated election system is leaving voters without real choices and failing to deliver true majority winners.
One of the most glaring issues? North Carolina's dangerously low electoral threshold. With just 30% of the vote, candidates can win elections—meaning a small fraction of voters in low-turnout primaries effectively determine the outcome of general elections. This undermines voter confidence and fuels political polarization.

Republican Leaders Are Already Using RCV
Despite fearmongering from entrenched party elites, conservative leaders across the country have embraced RCV:
🔹 Utah Republicans use RCV in party caucuses.
🔹 Alaska Republicans and Virginia GOP have used RCV to select nominees.
🔹 Georgia Republicans have explored RCV to eliminate costly runoffs.
RCV doesn’t benefit one party over another—it benefits voters. It ensures the best candidate wins—not just the one who squeaks by with a small faction of support.
@SecRubio Literally everything you said before becoming Secretary of State was in full support of Ukraine and President Zelensky. Where is your integrity? #TrumpLapDog
This is Marco Rubio explaining how the USA promised to defend Ukraine forever if they got rid of their nuclear arsenal left after the Soviet Union fell.
This is why lil marco was sinking into the couch. He was hoping we wouldn’t find it…so don’t RT right now this very second.
Ranked-choice voting (RCV) could transform NC elections by eliminating 'spoiler' effects, empowering voters, and ensuring fair outcomes. Learn how RCV aligns with conservative values and strengthens democracy in our new piece in @CarolinaJournal

An excellent research paper by Brookings Institute with many important insights. I appreciated this articulation of the current problem with Party Primaries. Use of Instant Runoff Voting (ranked choice) addresses extremism by ensuring majority support.
Good article by the @BrookingsInst on the effectiveness of Ranked Choice Voting.
The two most revealing points to me are: (1) When implemented RCV delivers on the expected results. More civil politics, and elected officials with broader appeal [50%+1 votes] (2) It is opposed by the party in power; whether Dems or Rep because they want to keep the current system because it benefits them. Those in power want to keep power...
Those two points tell you all you need to know about the benefit of RCV!
Lessons learned: RCV implementation has better odds when local community outreach takes the lead. Not led but out of state money / organizations. Voter education is important. (shockers I know)

Projected deficit for 2024: a staggering $1.8 trillion. This isn't a revenue problem; it's a spending problem. Trump spent too much. Biden spent too much.
And I don't want to hear 'but Trump.' Neither administration has shown any real intent to balance the budget or curb spending.
We can't borrow our way to prosperity.

RT: A North Carolina law passed in 2013 made it much harder to improve access for pedestrians and cyclists on state roads.
The laws are created by people voted into power. Take back the power w/ your vote. https://t.co/P8Uq277NYP
