@zagrebbi The Malcolm Gladwell chapter of Outliers (The Matthew Effect) details this phenomenon really well. Great read and super consequential for the younger kids
@InezFeltscher Inez, all of those assets matter, obviously. Yet the only ethical stance is one in which educators do all they can to provide support the to children who need it. Either we think teachers can change lives and outcomes or we don’t. I think the profession can and does.
@hecubian_devil@tracewoodgrains Tests - the ones you’re referencing - were established (and still function) to ensure that all students attain basic literacy and numeracy. They measure proficiency, not achievement. We have no idea what this set of students achieves. God, I wish you knew more
@jayvanbavel@NYMag What a case for accelerated math instruction. The math literacy of the author and editors was so (apparently) inadequate that they fundamentally misinterpret research — and then cite the error as validation LOL
@lenibriscoe@read_naveed Agree profoundly. Anyone with any knowledge of this industry whatsoever knows that @NYCMayor is just saying lots of nice words with his PR machine
