An update on this challenge -- just tried a freshly minted developer build of FME 2023 for native Apple Silicon on an M1 Ultra Mac Studio. 12 seconds to do a read and overlay of 9 million+ points.

Peter is great. I remember meeting him when I did a training course many years ago in Denmark. Peter just got it right away. Another good memory is Peter at our UC in the early days going against with workbench and his FME scripts. Darn english keyboard! All the best Peter!!
