A mom called the cops on her 16 year old son because she was allegedly having trouble controlling him. Officers from the Melbourne (Florida) Police Department (my hometown) arrive on scene. They see a kid… One of the cops jumps out of his cruiser, threatens the kid, runs towards him and basically tackles him to the ground. The other cops then pile on. They pull the kid’s arm behind his back, dislocating his elbow. Only after they do this, do the cops bother to identify the kid. As it turns out, they just tackled and injured the wrong kid. In November 2022, a pack of 11 coyotes slipped toward a flock of sheep under the cover of darkness in Decatur, Georgia.

Standing between them and the flock was Casper, a 21 month old Great Pyrenees livestock guardian dog.

As the attack unfolded, Casper charged into the pack. His owner, John Wierwille, later said the fight lasted more than 30 minutes. By the time it was over, eight coyotes were dead and the rest had fled. Every single sheep survived.

Then Casper disappeared.

For two days, his family searched, fearing the worst. When he finally returned, he could barely walk. His body was covered in deep bite wounds. His ears were torn. Part of his tail was so badly damaged it had to be amputated. Veterinarians said he was incredibly fortunate to be alive.

One detail often repeated online says Casper spent those two days hunting the surviving coyotes. That has never been confirmed.

What is confirmed is more than enough.

A young guardian dog faced impossible odds, protected the flock he was raised to defend, and somehow found his way home.

Courage is not measured by how loudly it is remembered. Sometimes it is written quietly in the lives that were never lost because one protector refused to run.
