They are still kids. what you’re doing is inhumane and an absolute waste of everyone’s time, because you know very well that it doesn’t how many times you arrest or harass these children, they’ll be back on the streets in a few days.
This is a very complex and multi-layered problem that requires careful thinking, real empathy and deep concerted effort if we’re going to even stand a chance.
Of course I understand why there’s a lot of anger and complaint about these children and the many vices they have committed. but it’s the only way they can get our attention—A child who is not embraced by the village will burn it down to feel its warmth.
This will become an even bigger crisis with time and it’s happening insidiously. it’s the very genesis of why we have such proliferation of Area boys and thugs In every corner of the streets of Lagos. We forget that no one becomes an area boy as an adult, it’s the children neglected overtime that grow up to become the thugs and area boys we complain bitterly about.
I have given the last 8 years of my life to working with these children and I have learnt many painful lessons in this time that continue to keep me up at night.
There are thousands of homeless/street kids wandering the streets of Lagos. If you drive regularly along Lekki -Epe expressway, you must have encountered them several times. They come up to your cars, beg for money, wash your windows, sometimes they become violent and break your side mirrors. Then they go back to their crevices to sleep, then resume hustling the next day. For you it’s a simple commute, for them, it’s the only life they’ll ever know.
Before we can understand how we got to this point and what we can do differently, we need to go back in time.
There are 3 major reasons why this problem has festered:
The first reason is 70% of these kids are not from Lagos, they are mostly from the neighboring states (Ogun, Ibadan, Kwara etc) and in some cases, from Northern and eastern Nigeria. In trying to escape extreme poverty, they are falsely promised that Lagos is the land flowing with milk and honey. So the ones that are brave enough to seek greener pasture become rebellious, abandon their families and travel with friends to Lagos with high hopes of succeeding and someday return home with great wealth. For many of them, there’s no going back if this doesn’t happen. It’s the same reason many Africans try to cross the Sahara desert into Europe.
The second reason is a failure of the public education system (primary/secondary schools). Most of the kids drop out of school because they struggle academically and are dismissed as Olodos (good for nothing) by their overworked and underpaid teachers. Infact, the public secondary system is the biggest contributor to this problem.
The third and most Important reason is the failure of the family unit(Broken homes). 80 percent of the children child you see neglected and abandoned on the streets is a direct result of broken homes. (This is actual data by the way) Maybe stop one day have a conversation with any of them, and you’ll quickly realize that the stories are very similar. It’s a failure of the family system, underpinned by poverty.
Some of them are orphans, some with single parents, some abused sexually even by their own fathers. The stories are deeply painful.
Through the culmination of these three things, the kids end up on the streets of Lagos. For them it’s an escape from hell and there’s no going back home. Death is a kinder fate.
With time, it becomes clear that the promise of a better life in Lagos was a facade and the beginning of an even greater struggle. But this time without a roof over their heads…
The streets become their new home and a life of violent survival begins. There are a couple of hotspots where they begin to converge—Oshodi Underbridge, Jakande, Marwa Bustop, Osale Eko dumpsite, Mushin, Ajah roundabout, Agege, Surulere Underbridge etc.
I doubt people understand how families of mad/crazy people feel. I doubt that they know that they may have families at all, but I understand, being a family member to one.
I promise you that if you are not calm, collected, thoughtful, thick-skinned, resolute and a tough person, it will break you. Especially in Nigeria.
I remember what I call my Ice Breaker or my "Introduction" into toughness and being blind to shame. It was when my mum's mental health issue began, she ran away from home and we were looking for her. Someone called my grandma to tell her she was seen at Challenge Bus Stop in Ìbàdàn.
Challenge Bus Stop used to be a Bus Stop that had a popular market by it. The road was bad, dirty, tiny, busy and dangerous for pedestrians until this new government came in. Only those who have been in this state for at least two decades would get the picture.
I got to the Bus Stop, roamed everywhere till I found her. She was so dirty, wet and smelly. She was reluctant, violent, she fought me, called me a kidnapper and was all noisy. She fought me off so hard, I was so sad because I couldn't believe my mum could ever become like that, but I didn't let go of my grip, because she was prepared to run off and we had been in search of her for days. I was 17. It was closing hours. You can imagine the crowd. Commuters were rushing to enter the taxis. I was not only fighting to get a taxi for myself, but my mum, while trying to out-do other people rushing to enter into those taxis at the same time and ensuring she didn't run away.
It was either "I no fit carry mad person o" or they call an outrageous amount that could take you to another state, or the occupants of the taxi refuse to go with the taxi after experiencing some drama. You, are, in one word, a bad business.
Other things you experience is isolation, betrayal and being gossiped. Isolation isn't an issue for me because I am naturally selective of my company, but one betrayal is an event that shook the hell out of me, after which I would tell you my experience with being gossiped, which is the funny one.
What makes my mum's story very sad is that an anonymous person took advantage of my mum's mental health and impregnated her. She named a couple of persons when asked who the father was. My family eagerly spring to wanting to approach the persons. I stop them from doing so because I prefer to be strategic. I am not interested in finding a father for my sister, but punishing the said person from the 102 ways I curated as consequences for the wrong, when it is time. I know they'd deny and I can't work with a "claim". So I am going to wait till I have the time and resources to hold on to substantial evidence.
My mom's story was inconsistent, but I had a friend who was twice my age that year, whose story was consistent about the supposed father of my sister, even more than my mother's. This friend claimed that he was sure about whom the father of my sister was on two basis, because she(my sister) looks like him and because he saw them(my mum and the man) together a lot, in the man's car, his house and several places before the birth of my sister. He talked to my family about it because he knew my approach to the issue was different, and not with mere confrontation.
He charged them up and they approached him, only for him to arrest my mum and intimidate them. All these(pregnancy and back and forth) happened while I was away for close to two years in Ekiti. So, one evening in Ìbàdàn, after my sister has been birthed, I sat down with this friend who was say, 36 years, while I was 18, at a public place. Not long after we got there, the man my supposed friend accused of being the father of my sister approached me.

🚨Statement on behalf of the Duke of Sussex and Lord Watson 22 January 2025
In a monumental victory today, News UK have admitted that The Sun, the flagship title for Rupert Murdoch’s UK media empire, has indeed engaged in illegal practices. This represents a vindication for the hundreds of other claimants who were strong-armed into settling, without being able to get to the truth of what was done to them.
After endless resistance, denials and legal battles by News Group Newspapers, including spending more than a billion pounds in payouts and in legal costs (as well as paying-off those in the know) to prevent the full picture from coming out, News UK is finally held to account for its illegal actions and its blatant disregard for the law. It has also specifically admitted wrongdoing against Tom Watson, and admitted unlawful acts by The Sun, as well as by the News of the World, against Prince Harry.
The truth that has now been exposed is that NGN unlawfully engaged more than 100 private investigators over at least 16 years on more than 35,000 occasions. This happened as much at The Sun as it did at the News of the World, with the knowledge of all the Editors and executives, going to the very top of the company.
What’s even worse is that in the wake of the 2006 arrest of a Royal correspondent, there was an extensive conspiracy to cover up what really had been going on and who knew about it. Senior executives deliberately obstructed justice by deleting over 30 million emails, destroying back-up tapes, and making false denials – all in the face of an on-going police investigation. They then repeatedly lied under oath to cover their tracks – both in Court and at the Leveson Public Inquiry.
At her trial, in 2014 Rebekah Brooks, said “when I was Editor of The Sun we ran a clean ship”. Now, 10 years later when she is CEO of the company, they now admit, when she was Editor of The Sun, they ran a criminal enterprise.
Far from being relics of a distant past, many of those behind these unlawful practices remain firmly entrenched in senior positions today, both within News UK and other media outlets across the world, wielding editorial power and perpetuating the toxic culture in which they continue to thrive. It’s perhaps no surprise that all of their senior executives and editors refused to turn up to court to give evidence. The failure of each of these key individuals to come and answer questions under oath spoke volumes in itself, but their collective silence is deafening.
Today’s result has been achieved only through the sheer resilience of Prince Harry and Lord Watson, whose willingness to take NGN to trial has led directly to this historic admission of unlawfulness at The Sun. It has only been by taking NGN - not just to the steps of court but inside the court room itself - that these
Claimants have finally managed to extract this historic admission of guilt.
As a direct result of him taking a stand, Prince Harry and his immediate family have also had to repeatedly withstand aggressive and vengeful coverage since starting his claim over five years ago. This has created serious concerns for the security of him and his family.
The rule of law must now run its full course. Prince Harry & Tom Watson join others in calling for the police and Parliament to investigate not only the unlawful activity now finally admitted, but the perjury and cover ups along the way. Its clear now this has occurred throughout this process, including through sworn evidence in inquiries and court hearings, and in testimony to Parliament, until today’s final collapse of NGN’s defence.
Today the lies are laid bare. Today, the cover-ups are exposed. And today proves that no one stands above the law. The time for accountability has arrived.
Monstrous levels of leeching & greed by the British Monarchy. Shame on King Charles and Prince William. The servitude mentality of Brits is so medieval. The only purpose the Monarchy has ever served is its existence. No Corp, CGT or Inheritance tax on its wealth while we bear the worst tax burden in history. The Monarchy has always been the benefactor of the race, class, wealth divide. It doesn't serve us.
Warning: Seven Rules for Surviving A Kemi Badenoch Victory
Today the most prominent member of white supremacy's Black collaborator class (in Britain) is likely to be made leader of the Conservative Party. Here are some handy tips for surviving the immediate surge of Badenochism (i.e. white supremacy in Blackface):
1. Don’t allow yourself to be gaslit. Of course, a victory for Badenoch is an obvious, unprecedented and once inconceivable victory for racism. Yet for legitimacy and national blush-saving purposes, it will be portrayed as anything but. Hence the Black & Brown voices invited to speak about a Badenoch victory in the media will likely be carefully selected. Expect a lot of Sunder Katwala and Trevor Phillips types, but not much from anyone else. Certainly not knowledgeable objectors.
2. Don't feed the trolls: avoid the inevitable avalanche of “whatever your politics” rhetoric. E.g. “Whatever your politics, you must acknowledge how great and progressive the Conservative Party is now that a Blackface of white supremacy has broken the glass ceiling for all Black people…” and “Whatever your politics, Black children finally have a great role model to look up to”.
3. Don’t get arrested Pt. I: As that free speech championing entity known as the British state would say: be careful what you post. The police scour this app for "offensive" material and they take immense glee in weaponising laws designed to protect ethnic minorities against ethnic minorities.
4. Don’t get arrested Pt. II: The police don't do nuance, and they conveniently refuse to understand Black & Brown intra-communal language or forms of critique, satire or compliment (e.g. coconut, Uncle Tom, Aunt Kemi, house negro, choc ice, etc).
5. Don’t get arrested Pt. III: In pursuit of "protecting" the feelings and political positions of ethnic minority politicians (with far-right sensibilities), the police and CPS will do everything conceivably possible to legally and psychologically destroy you.
6. Don’t get arrested Pt. IV: Look up The Emoji Trial and The Coconut Trial for more information on how quickly proprietary Black & Brown intellectual tradition, thought or language can land you in a British police cell.
7. Remember White supremacy’s silver linings: they always discard their tools. Always. Yes, this will be a painful and shameful period. Our various politics and very standing in Britain and as British people will be seriously compromised by a Badenoch victory. Yet rest assured: painful as it may be for Black & Brown people – history teaches us that Badenochism will end even worse for Kemi Badenoch.
"Amen" said the church.
Good luck!
@RishiSunak Where do you think racism starts, Sunak?
It starts by scapegoating immigrants. It starts by calling them illegal.
It starts by creating fear and anger.
Exactly as you’re doing here.
You are promoting prejudice.
You blow the dog whistle and then deplore the dogs you excite.
A few things to know about the chess prodigy Deborah Quickpen:
1. Coming from a humble background in Bayelsa, her parents struggled to pay her school tuition, and she almost dropped out due to financial difficulties.
2. She started playing chess at the age of 3 after being discovered by my good friend and Nigeria’s current national champion, @BKigigha, who has coached her ever since.
3. In 2018, she represented Bayelsa state at the National Sports Festival, becoming the youngest athlete to ever participate in the festival's history.
4. She won three gold medals at the National Youth Games, making history as the youngest person to win 18 out of 18 games.
5. Deborah won the Under-10 African Youth Chess Championship in Accra, Ghana, becoming the youngest Nigerian female player to be conferred the Woman Candidate Master title.
6. At the age of 10, she was appointed Youth Ambassador for Sports by Bayelsa State Governor Sen Douye Didi.
7. In 2023, at the age of 11, she became Nigeria’s female national champion, a record that might take decades to break.
8. She is the highest-ranked under-12 female chess player in Africa and the third in the world.
9. Currently in JSS3, she maintains a stellar academic performance, earning double promotions in primary school.
10. Next month, she will represent Nigeria at the FIDE World Cup in Georgia.
With the right financial support and visibility, Deborah could very well become West Africa’s first chess grandmaster. She’s young, driven and hardworking.
I’m immensely proud of Deborah and honored to play her in a match on June 11th in preparation for her first World Cup appearance in Georgia.

Horrific scenes from Rafah tonight.
Too awful to re post- charred and decapitated bodies of children.
And all while the world watches.
I truly hope that in my lifetime we see those in power held to account - those who could have stopped this and failed to do so
The appalling heartless leaders who could not even find the words to condemn a massacre that has been live-streamed on our phones for months
So many of us have publicly and privately urged our government, the PM, the @FCDOGovUK to act.
This is on their watch - because they armed , supported and failed to condemn Netanyahu and his extreme right wing
We failed to support the ICJ , abstained at the UNSC , undermined the ICC and continued to arm and support a regime that has brutally slaughtered innocents for months.
UK foreign policy on Palestine is morally bankrupt.
I am sorry we failed you.🇵🇸
This is incredible, but sadly unsurprising.
