I think a more likely explanation is a combination of two factors:

1. The Chinese do not benefit from economic instability so they will do what they can to avoid it

2. The Chinese want to demonstrate to the US and themselves that their strategic inventories are functional

The reason oil prices have stayed relatively low is the Chinese effectively took 6m bpd of demand out of the market.

2m from switching to electricity/coal

2m by halting the filling of their strategic reserves

2m is unexplained and presumably is drawing down from reserves

Notably the Chinese were previously filling their reserves at an avg of $74 per barrel which is around current market prices.

And yet going into the Trump meeting in mid-May coincided with the peak in Chinese demand near-term demand.

Now one explanation is Xi is Trumps best buddy and wanted to help the Americans out.

That’s obviously retarded. Iran was effectively a Chinese vassal and 90% of its exports and most of what drove the economy came via China.

Instead the more likely explanation is similar to the purging of Chinese generals this is Beijing signaling to Washington without losing face.

They are saying “hey we see that you economically encircled us with this transshipment clause in trade agreements post Liberation Day. We see the rest of the world is getting pissed at us for flooding the market with exports. But financially we can’t afford economic escalation. The unemployed factory workers will revolt. So let’s kick the can down the road”.

And Trump so far has been ok with this weird quasi war quasi truce. Mostly because the U.S. has been using this time to re-industrialize and unlike Twitter the admin is fairly confident midterms will be a republican sweep and so they can afford to be patient.

This is my interpretation of recent events.

I’m all ears for a more intelligent explanation.

The actual joke here is not that liberals lack a theory of mind for anyone on the right (they do) while the average person on the right has one for liberals (they do, it's mistaken)

It's that lib lack a theory of mind *for themselves*

Their views of themselves and why they believe what they believe are entirely incorrect - they view their beliefs as "rational" and "following the evidence" but their actual beliefs are more simply described by "attempts to match the beliefs of the hivemind" and the hivemind changes beliefs based on if those beliefs produce power

The simplest example (and there are others) is everything around covid where it went from "it's racist to worry about a disease - hug a Chinese person" to "shut everything down" to "racism is the real public health emergency" all following purely from the logic of power

If a liberal had a good theory of mind *for himself* he would see himself as so cynical that he couldn't function as a good liberal - just saying that this is how they form views is enough to disqualify anyone from taking their views seriously

Them lacking a theory of mind for anyone on the right is just a natural consequence of this
