The International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists (IDEI), observed on November 2nd, annually but for Lango will be held on Friday October 31

This year's theme,
" Raising Awareness on AI-facilitated Gender-Based Violence against Women Journalists," highlights the urgent need to protect women journalists from online and offline threats.

The event aims to raise awareness, promote dialogue, and advocate for the safety and protection of journalists, particularly women.

Objectives:
-Raise awareness about the importance of ending impunity for crimes against journalists

-Promote dialogue and advocacy for journalist safety and protection

Highlight the specific challenges faced by women journalists

October is internationally observed as Cybersecurity Awareness Month, a period dedicated to promoting safer digital practices and strengthening resilience against online threats.

At DefendDefenders, we recognise that true digital safety begins with the empowerment of human rights defenders (HRDs). Through our DefendersTech Department, we equip HRDs with the knowledge, skills, and tools they need to navigate the digital space safely. One of our flagship initiatives, the Safe Sisters Fellowship, brings together women HRDs from across the continent to learn, share experiences, and address the digital security challenges they encounter in their work and daily lives, enabling them to carry out their human rights work safely online.

One of the fellowship's beneficiaries is @OmasweetheartTv , a journalist and broadcaster from Onitsha, Anambra State, Nigeria. In 2023, Chioma joined our Safe Sisters Fellowship, a transformative experience she describes as bringing a “360-degree turnaround” in her career and life.

After completing the fellowship in Uganda, Chioma returned home to Nigeria and, with our support, launched a series of digital safety trainings for secondary school students. Since then, she has reached thousands of students, developed a digital safety curriculum, and authored a children’s book on body and internet safety.

“I am now an AI enthusiast. I am now heading towards technology, even as a journalist. Safe Sisters has impacted my work, my life, and the things I do.”

As the world observes Cybersecurity Awareness Month, we celebrate digital security champions like Chioma, who are extending cybersecurity awareness to grassroots communities.

Through DefendersTech, we are committed to enhancing the digital security of human rights defenders, empowering them to carry out their work safely and effectively.

By luck we have Lake Kyoga within our vicinity,so why can't we have pipe water which is clean and safe? Dr Jane Aceng asks rhetorically. According to Dr @JaneRuth_Aceng ,city dwellers should not rely on borehole but have access to clean and safe drinking water and she says this will be achieved especially in peri-urban parts of Lira city and she cited Burlobo and Akia.
