@Kelsey4Dawn I can empathize Kelsey. Thankfully there are still opportunities to do some good for this country. It’s easy to be consumed by what is wrong in Canada, but it’s a healthy exercise for me to inventory what is still good and inspiring about 🇨🇦and democracy.
Parliament hill views from the Egg Farmers of Canada Chairman’s Reception at the Westin tonight. Feels great to meet and mingle with real, live people and experience how “normal” feels again!
The snowstorm brought some anxiety as we knew we had some close up cows and they were left to fend for themselves 5 miles from home. We put some bedding out on Sunday and hoped for the best. Thankfully the no-nonsense and low-maintenance cows came through for us again!
Supplementing the cows on pasture with some pea straw (lots of peas in the bales) and protein pellets. Keeping the manure in the field where it’s needed, the calves clean and healthy and the cows fit. Cost effective! What more could I ask for really??
Had some good help today for sorting off some fat lambs. These lambs could be priced by the ounce, never have I seen the sheep market this high in my 25+ years in and around the industry! As far as sheep farming goes, 2020 has been great!
@derehamsheep@dnlfarms@KevinHursh1 Yeah, we have heard that loud and clear. The problem is that you need western lambs. The reality is that we would ALL be better off long term with twice as many lambs to sell at 2/3’s of the current prices. The industry has been begging for expansion for 5 years now.
@derehamsheep@dnlfarms@KevinHursh1 Less costs to market locally vs shipping east. Freight, shrink, commission and checkoffs, western lamb discounting. All takes a big bite out of the final number. If we can market strong out here, we can take a discount to Ontario prices and still end up with more money clear.
@dnlfarms@KevinHursh1 Light feeder lambs as high as $5/lb in Ontario. Heavy fed lambs bringing in excess of $400/hd. Those are highs of the likes we have never seen. We are marketing lambs slightly discounted to that in Manitoba, but still very strong and considerably less costs.
Another beautiful day for late fall grazing. 2020 will be remembered by many for the negative things associated with it. I plan to remember it for its awesome weather in MB. Moisture in the spring, hot summer and warm dry fall! I’ll take another one just like it!!
