This archival video depicts Ojukwu, Zik and Enahoro at the “political solution” summit between Nigeria and Biafra in Ethiopia in 1968. I posted it to underscore the abiding imperative of political solution to every political conflict.

It is noteworthy that it was Nigeria that had initiated this 1968 dialogue, but it thereafter pedaled back to renege on it, just like it did with #Aburi. Why? Because Nigeria was more interested in annihilating Biafra than coming to terms with. And in doing so, more precious lives were lost. Is it any different today?

So, the lesson learned is this: Agitating for a separate State is a political issue, not a legal or judicial issue. Thus, it can never be resolved by resorting to persecutions that masquarade as prosecutions, or even by some military conquest. Instead, what is required is to come to terms with it.

Otherwise, it turns to a festering sore that persists until the government of the day does the right thing by pivoting to the reality of constructive engagement. That time is now, but it lies entirely with the government to make that choice.

I totally condemn the unprovoked attack on pensioners peacefully protesting at the Lagos State House of Assembly earlier today.

It is bad enough that these senior citizens are being denied their legitimate post-retirement entitlements after giving years of their lives in service. To then unleash tear gas on them for peacefully demanding what is rightfully theirs is cruel, reckless, and completely unacceptable.

Teargassing elderly citizens in these circumstances is equivalent to pushing them into a gas chamber. Many of these pensioners may already be vulnerable to the dangerous effects of chemical fumes, and such an assault is grave; it could even have fatal consequences.

The officers responsible for this brutal attack must be identified, arrested, investigated, and prosecuted. Where the evidence supports it, they should face charges such as attempted murder, reflecting the seriousness of deliberately exposing vulnerable senior citizens to potentially lethal harm.

Our pensioners deserve their entitlements, dignity, and respect, not brutality!
