What if your willingness to be coached is one of the most important leadership lessons your team ever sees?
In this clip, Tara VanDerveer shares how bringing in a leadership coach to support her team unexpectedly helped her become a better coach as well.
"Here I have coached for like 44 years at the time, and I think she really helped me up my game. I listened and I took her coaching very seriously."
Here you have a Hall of Famer, 3-time national champion, a GOAT in college basketball, and she's still choosing to be a student.
The moment you believe your experience exempts you from learning is often the moment your growth begins to slow and your team pays a price.
Experience should be a foundation for learning, not an excuse to stop.
Great leaders never stop being students because they know others are always learning from their example.

Love this story from @DrBuning for @PrepSoftball on how to minimize what fear does to your perception so you can see situations more clearly. 🧠

Love this technique! This is an ex of HOW you talk to yourself matters. Not just what you say but how you say it! What works for you? Bossy! Assertive? Direct? Share time…
"I had to boss myself around ... when I got bossy with myself we scored"
Rhonda Revelle has preached presence all season for the #Huskers
I asked her about how she did that in the NCAA Tournament win over USD:
"On a team, everybody's enegery counts — including mine" @WOWT6News
Let's talk about perceptual distortions! Take a read as I start a short series on what distortions are, how they can affect how you perform, & what you can do to help you (or others) recognize & move through a distortion: https://t.co/fZDx5tSvM9
Saw this job posting & wanted to point out this type of job would be a great fit for someone that has our MS in athletic coaching degree or our grad certificate (including mental performance consultants)! Check out programs out! https://t.co/IWc8oYdFul
Catch Gm 2 of @GamecockSoftbll v A&M w/@SCBrad92 & me on the SEC+ station today at 1p. Will SC hold off the Aggies & take the series today??
One of our MS students rocking one of our shirts! @Gozzie15Jenn participated in the Womens’ mentoring program we offer to current female coaching students 😁. Want in on this? Check us out: https://t.co/IWc8oYdFul
I have so many issues with this…I’ve seen a lot of posts this year jumping on athletes for showing emotion & claiming that’s unsportsmanlike. Nah. THIS is what unsportsmanlike is. The athlete & coach should be penalized & the umpire needs to do better. Terrible.
There is a right way to play this game and a wrong way and this is 100% in the wrong. I don’t care that the batter moved back out of the box- you don’t intentionally step back to throw at her head, as hard as you can, from about a foot away. I don’t want to hear “you don’t know it wasn’t intentional.” Save it. The runner at 3rd is about a half step off 3rd. The way the catcher is positioned to throw, that throw is going towards the 3rd base fence. The most telling part though? No one checks on that batter and catcher gets a high five right after from her coach. The batter ended up with a concussion.
This is completely unacceptable and has no place in this sport.
Loved presenting with a couple of our MS students, Jenn Gosline & Dave Plettl! We shared the work from our helping skills course & how the DISC assessment shapes their coaching @daveplettl@Gozzie15Jenn@fsuannescollege@AthleteAssess
Sometimes we just need a distraction to snap us out of thought & emotion cycles. Distractions can be physical (eg, hand clap/squeeze, breath work), mental (eg, thought reframes, cues), & external (another person cues/redirects you). Use distractions strategically to help reset 😊
This is my slam ball. To me, it’s heavy. If I keep telling myself it’s heavy, guess what happens? It FEELS heavy! Heavier than what it is. Instead, if I tell myself “pick it up”, I don’t feel the “heavy” as much. Check your self talk. Set yourself up to do the thing.
Ladies-Just a reminder that having each other’s back is instinctual! Lift each other up, protect. The jealousy you feel is you being in a threat mentality. Lacking confidence, fearing exposure. Address that in yourself v taking it out on other women. This is a skill.
Sometimes it feels like we don't have much. Especially when we're losing/failing, but you want to know what you most likely DO have in situations? Take a read @PrepSoftball ...https://t.co/KASHgqMSQE
Your words matter! A little acknowledgment, encouragement, or praise can light someone’s fire! Your words can light YOU up too! How will you use your words today to light it up?
