Greek is just a jurisdiction, not a denomination. All orthodox Christians believe in the Nicene Creed, have the same basic theology, and celebrate the same Divine Liturgy. Besides Greek, there is Russian, Serbian, Bulgarian, Antiochian, etc. These are jurisdictions and each have their own Bishop. Technically, the Pope is the schismatic Bishop of Rome.
Icons are NOT idols, and we never worship them! What we do is HONOR and respect the person in the image. That respect passes also to Jesus since the Saints are His followers. Additionally, it respects the miracle of the incarnation where Jesus deified flesh (matter) and became the firstborn of a new creation…and those who follow Him (the Saints) will also be resurrected with the same type of deified bodies. That being said, the kissing and bowing to icons is typical of how near-eastern cultures showed respect to each other. (And Christianity at its roots is an ancient near-east religion). The Bible says to greet each other with a Holy kiss. Bowing was a sign of respect in that culture and the practice remains so in the church to this day. The lives of the Saints serve to remind us that we are all striving for the same thing…a relationship with God that transcends this earth. They show us that the Christian life CAN be lived…by them and by us as ordinary people. Many were wicked sinners but were transformed by their relationship to Christ. So no…these are not “idols”. The fact that you would even characterize them as such proves that you haven’t done your homework.
This is what I like to call, “End-Stage Protestantism”. It’s the inevitable result of being a schism of a schism, and therefore separated from the Church established by Christ. If you want to be free from this, come to your local Orthodox Church and attend a Divine Liturgy. We established the canon of scripture (the Bible), and we follow it AND the teaching of the apostles passed down through Holy Tradition….just as St. Paul said in 2 Thessalonians 2:15, “So then, brothers, stand firm and hold to the traditions that you were taught by us, either by our spoken word or by our letter.” Protestantism is a house built on sinking sand…and it’s sinking fast right before our eyes.
As a Californian, I can tell you with certainty that the elections here are rigged. Everyone knows it! At election time, the state is awash in live ballots flooding mailboxes everywhere. Every dog, cat, bird, and pet iguana gets a ballot…not really, but rest assured every “resident” gets one, and since there is no voter ID, anyone can vote and vote multiple times. It’s sickening and scary. Stop gaslighting us Gavin!
@Protestia Let’s be real for a minute…this is no “church”, this is a venue providing live Sunday morning entertainment while PRETENDING that it’s a church service.
Meanwhile…In California where you have been governor for six years…Gas is over $6 per gallon, the average home prices are the highest in the country, homelessness is out of control, taxes are the highest in the nation, and companies and individuals are rising to leave as fast as they can. Seems like you should worry about those things more and President Trump less.
@GavinNewsom I’m sure if YOU were a “Trillionaire”, you would give your money all away! Right. Yeah. Whatever. For the record, if there is a system that is rigged, it is the elections system in CA.
