I really enjoyed this conversation with Tali (@TaliLev123) and Direna (@DirenaAC) and attendees at #AACRPan23 so much.
A few take home messages.
During the initial submission & revision process there are two “ancillary” documents that can be overlooked but are really integral to the manuscript:
A: The cover letter, and
B: The response to reviewers
A:Please make sure the cover letter is not just a regurgitation of the abstract. It needs to capture the novelty and key findings of the paper and succinctly summarize for the editor why they should send this paper out for review. The cover letter should be a window into the “soul” of the paper so please spend time on it.
B: Likewise, the response to reviewer document is hugely important as it is typically the first document busy reviewers are going to read on a resubmission. Please be detailed, including providing new data and figures in the actual response instead of just saying you addressed it in the manuscript. If a comment was not addressed in the revision (scope, cost, time, whatever) or you disagreed with a critique, please address that sincerely.
Thank you to Tali and Direna for reiterating the importance of both documents. @ElizSMcKenna@HarmonyTurk@ciacobu@YehlabUNC@SearsRosie@AACR
Great piece on the CHAMPS initiative which has enriched knowledge about causes of death in children. We are utilizing CHAMPS data to improve cause-specific mortality estimates from verbal autopsies. 👇

So thankful to review panel for finding the proposed 5-yr research program innovative and timely.
Wouldn't be possible without help from my mentors, team members, and colleagues who kindly supported me over the years! ☺️
