Obama: Imagine if I had done any of this. Imagine if I had pulled Fox News’ credentials from the White House press corps. Imagine if I had said to law firms that were representing parties that were upset with policies my administration had initiated, that you will not be allowed into government buildings. We will punish you economically for dissenting from the Affordable Care Act or the Iran deal. We will ferret out students who protest against my policies.
It’s unimaginable that the same parties that are silent now would have tolerated behavior like that from me, or a whole bunch of my predecessors.
Zomi was one of the earliest employees at World Central Kitchen. She first showed up to volunteer at our WCK kitchen in Guatemala after the Fuego volcano eruption—and became like family. Zomi was effervescent, her spirit of service embodied the greatest aspects of humanity. Anyone who meets Zomi never forgets her huge smile and warm laugh. When others were facing the darkest of moments, Zomi was a shining light of comfort, and the world is a dimmer place without her. 💔
Since 14 October 2023, I have not watched a single news segment on television. I can’t bring myself to immerse myself deliberately in the cacophony of crappola that emerges constantly from the mainstream channels. Even the abc has become a disappointing shadow of its former self.
The hate, division, baiting antagonists and the racism of the No campaign echoed and promoted incessantly in rampant sound bites by MSM is bad enough online, on radio and continuously pumped out in propagandic advertisements for proponents of the No campaign - without having to watch it being echoed or barely concealed by RW sycophants of supposed news to the masses.
This shameful partisan and deliberately destructive chapter in our history has done immense damage to many people. The psychological impact will have lasting effects on First Nations people. It has certainly had an impact on me. I have seen firsthand racism in my life via my father - but I underestimated the true dormant nature of hate, division and racism that can still exist in this country when triggered by fear and disinformation en masse for an extended period of time. A true playbook for right-wing ideology and extremism - spreading fear and hatred and “flooding the zone” with disinformation to divide.
I note that the instigators of the desperate “don’t know” campaign have since made themselves scarce - and that it is no longer essentially important to carry the torch for the “we are one” Australia now that the referendum is over. Which is basically how flooding the zone works. This strategy will be used over and over again by the NOalition in 2024. Flood the zone, spread the shyte sandwich far and wide, then move onto the next disruption. There will be no truth, no real news, no reality - just sound bites foghorned by the RW and echoed in the MSM.
A perfect strategy for wearing down the masses. People for the most part become exhausted. They either tune out or hear what they want to hear. Those of us who are able to sort through the chaff have to work hard to get there.
I tend to avoid commercial stations completely now - and only turn the television on to catch a documentary or a movie on a streaming app.
I catch up on news online and read articles that are relevant or of interest. Of course, it is impossible to avoid the propaganda, disinformation and misinformation - but at least I can recognise it for what it is. Many people can’t, and that is both the problem and what the protagonists rely upon.
Once again, but for the first time in 2024… We need urgent media reform in this country. It needs to happen this year. The sooner the better.

@wheelreinvent@MAndrewWaugh@declanmartin75 When I used to go running ALL the streets of Northcote were empty and unused. Tear them up I say!
I need everything busy at 6am
@wheelreinvent@GMan_XR6@declanmartin75 …but when the events are on they’re all stuffed full of people. Yarra park is a beautiful green space on the shoulder of the city and the main reason it’s not used off peak is it’s bordered by a massive road, a train yard and a sleepy housing suburb and…another park
The amazing @Allensworthband did a ripping funky cover of Sam Cooke’s Having a Party @ Queenscliff Music Festival. There simply isn’t a recording or cover like it. Thinking @scarypockets might like a crack before they move to originals
Rove admits on air that shows like this and other media have quite literally thrown the Voice to Parliament under the bus.
“Let’s just be decent for once” he says.
He wants Australians to really understand what the term “fair go” means - and we should be including First Nations people in this mantra.
Unfortunately it has taken until the 11th hour for somebody to call the media out on it.
It’s a simple ask. A Voice to Parliament. An advisory committee. It advises govt and parliament make decisions on that advice.
That’s it.
The scare mongering of the media must be dealt with.

@alanbeckco @brendongale25 @yes23au But that’s what you do when you pay tax. The constitution says the govt can collect tax. The details are all in legislation the parliament passed: which is exactly how the voice would be. You’re simply being asked “should the advisory body always exist?”
@pronotrigger@lhjh70@LibertarianMaya Please show me the bit in the constitution where it shows the detail of how the tax department will run. Not there. It’s figured out by the government of the day, but the constitution allows for a tax mechanism to be A permanent Thing. Same with the The Voice.
@DebMcCann6 @AmyRemeikis City of Melbourne is floating a cap on the number of days a rental can be run as short term stay; it’s a local government issue (tourist region councils LOVE AirBnB), which may be why it’s not being tackled federally. But yes, tax kickbacks are a big issue
