I still remember the first day of my orientation as an intern doctor so vividly.
The interns coordinator told us these words: โAS AN INTERN DOCTOR, YOU GO FOR A SHORT CALL AT YOUR OWN RISK.โ
Who can forget these words. Imagine the immense responsibility!
It haunted me. And truthfully, everytime I went for a short call, I would be praying that nothing happens to any patient in my short absentia.
See, if youโre going to put someoneโs child, girlfriend, boyfriend, mother, father, husband, or wife under such immense pressure, you had better pay them!
If a doctor is constantly overworked, under-supported, and still expected to deliver perfect care, the system is not โresilientโ - it is unsafe.
@CHRISBARYOMUNS1 You shall not subject medical interns to workloads without pay. It's unsafe. It's hypocrisy.

@rkalyes1 My senior, this @GovUganda is full of mafias, before you doubt, remember the kind of country you serve under which kind of the said "leaders"
Hunger was the issue... "enjala tezanya"
She took it to streets to advocate for food, now she creates a policy to remove the ka little food for the JHOs in using backdoor calling them student. What a species she is!
โDr. Ruth Aceng was once a strong advocate for medical interns during her early medical career, particularly between 1993โ1994 at St. Maryโs Hospital Lacor, where she and colleagues reportedly protested issues related to intern welfare and food shortages, an episode said to have led to her transfer to Mulago Hospital.โ
However, during her role as Minister of Health, she was part of Cabinet decisions that approved the withdrawal of medical internsโ allowances.
People forget their previous struggles so fast.

The current internship policy stipulates that the โstudentsโ will receive a provisional practicing license. Now, here is the problem:
A provisional license is still a license to practice medicine only that it comes with certain conditions.
So, the rule everywhere in the world is to get the degree first and then license second.
Now that MoH wants students to do medical internship, they have to be the first country in the world to license medical students.
Ridiculous, right?
โIt should be noted that in 1995 the Hon.@CHRISBARYOMUNS1 led a strike for medical interns that lead to increase of the pay of medical interns from 90,000 UgX to 180,000 UgX.โ Dr.Asiimwe R Frank.
Now he is the minister of health and defending the position of government not to pay medical interns
Now we want them to be students and dodge paying them yet you @GovUganda want them on ground as workers (Doctors, Pharmacists, Nurses) to cover the gaps in the failed health system.
On papers, student then on the ground, medical doctor. What the hell!!
That's a gap of 66% umfilled positions in the health sector, do we feel the impact? NO, reason is that interns actually feel that huge gap, cz interns toil day n night on duty, the turbulence isn't felt in the due to low staffing norms.
๐ฅ Slowly but surely the government, the @MinofHealthUG & @Educ_SportsUg are going to "feel" the medical interns
๐ฅ All government posts are not filled!
๐ฅ Did you know that Interns cover gaps in health! Look at the health sector stats!

If you are a medical intern reading this from a hospital corridor, with a total net worth of 3,000 shillings, one missed meal behind you, and another night call waiting for you like a stubborn creditor, please sit down for a moment.
We need to talk about the strange economics of this country.
To the public, these hungry unpaid interns are gonna be your drs, nurses, pharmacists, dentists. It's gonna be ๐ฅ ๐ฅ ๐ฅ, just tighten ur seat belt as you face the wrath.
Meanwhile, the ones who drafted the policy shall be taken abroad for medical care not here where its ๐ฅ ๐ฅ

๐ฅ These are dogs in the ICU.
In Uganda, we unfortunately cannot even pay a stipend for our medical interns.
๐ฅ Shame on us if we let this continue to happen โฃ๏ธ

As juniors,we shall have to look for survival munaye. I can't stretch 24hrs, 36hrs to 72hrs working hungry n get back to rest for 2hrs hoping to come back 4 another 36hr marathon without pay. Nedda, it's unacceptable

Explainer: Doctor to Patient ratio in Uganda is 1:25,000, way below WHO recommendation of 1:1000. This is one doctor attending to more than half of the entire sitting capacity of Namboole stadium. Governmentโs new Medical Internship policy could make this worse, hereโs how ๐๐พ
