If surgeons are being paid so much why are 80% of all graduates bending the knee and working as salaried physicians? Stop looking at us as the enemy. It’s the hospitals. My son had an appendectomy. The surgeon was paid $435. The hospital is paid $14,000 for a 18 hour stay and one dose of morphine. The AHA government are in cahoots.

If we all band together and demand fair pay for fair work, we’ll all be better off. The other option is just opt out of Medicare, which more and more physicians are doing. Or Concierge care for primary care. If you provide a good service, people will pay for it. If you take what the government gives you you’ll always get screwed.

@realdocspeaks $625 for an appendectomy within a 90 day global (meaning free care for three months) and $898 for a laminectomy also with a 90 day global is hardly lucrative. We are all under assault. The reason we’re losing is because the AMA does not have our back.

Agree, I operated on a woman who works as a waitress has been paying monthly out of her salary for United healthcare for years. She needed a lumbar artificial disc and they denied her care. I found a local ambulatory surgery center that would do her surgery for $19,000 and she put everything on her credit cards. I also did her surgery for free because I felt for her. United Healthcare is screwing us both. It’s disgusting they have such power. And of course they post profits of 40 billion a year.

How can they deny without examining the patient or looking at images?

@DutchRojas Can I get tax free status if I provide charity care? I asked my accountant if I can even write it off if I don’t get paid on a surgery apparently I need to work for six or seven hours for free then a 90 day global on top of that. No write off allowed per IRS.

Correct this is a complete scam. I do neurosurgery for a living. I can get a prior auth on a two level cervical disc replacement. Then I look at my billing software several months later and my billing team has to reach out to the health insurance like 60 times to get paid. Without variation of procedure at the time of service. This is stupid. And then we have some surgeries in which it says “no prior required” than we do the surgery and they still don’t pay 21% of the time. Our commercial payers either don’t pay or delay payment beyond 120 days.

It always amazes me how the public is left in the dark. Reimbursement to the facility for a total knee arthropathy in an outpatient surgery center is about $20-30,000. The orthopedic surgeon is paid only about $1200 top line revenue. After taxes and overhead that’s about $400 in the surgeon’s pocket - you can’t even buy a Dick’s Sporting Goods driver with that amount of money. Many are opting out of Medicare and charging cash usually $5-6000. This seems fair to me since they want $5000 replace one tooth in the dentist office.

@christisundead @DutchRojas Totally agree all my general surgery friends had to be handcuffed bend the knee, and become employed by hospital systems. They can’t make a living at those rates.
